George D. Colby

March 25, 1925 — October 1, 2008

George Dean Colby was born March 30, 1925 to Albert Warren "Bert" and Nellie Dell Lawson Colby in Beloit. He departed this life of 83 years, 6 months, and 2 days Wednesday afternoon, October 1, 2008 at the Mitchell County Hospital in Beloit.

A lifetime resident of the area, George graduated from Beloit High School in the Class of 1943. Upon graduation, he joined the United States Marine Corps and served during World War II. Following his honorable discharge, he returned home and began working at Boogaarts Food Store.

On October 24, 1948, he was united in marriage to Nina Bernese Poulton in Beloit. Three children Bob, Barbara, and Allen were born to this union.

In 1957, he began a distinguished career with the City of Beloit. He started out as a police officer, and then worked with the electric line crew for several months before becoming a clerk in the city office. He became City Clerk upon the retirement of Dick Alsop, and during the next 28 years was very successful and highly recognized for his diligence and accomplishments. His easy going, "I'll see what I can do" demeanor enabled him to work out just about any situation that came up. He retired on March 30, 1990.

George was a people person who did not know a stranger. Always happy and quick to volunteer, George was there for everyone. He touched the lives of many at Christmastime by being Santa Claus. He enjoyed membership in the Beloit Lions Club, was a pillar of the V.F.W. Post 6242 and a faithful servant at Zion Lutheran Church. He served as baseball coach and umpire for many years as well as being active in the Beloit Men's Bowling Association. His favorite pastime though, was fishing, whether the fish were biting or not.

George was preceded in death by his parents, one son Bob, brothers Albert, Joe, Jim, Paul, Robert & Wilmer Colby; and sisters Irene McElroy, Louise Higgins, and Bernice Hull.

Left to mourn his death and celebrate his life are his wife Bernese of the home, one son Allen Colby and wife Alice of Beloit, one daughter Barbara Wise and husband Joe of Cawker City, one daughter-in-law JoAnn Colby of Beloit; one brother Bill Colby and wife Trudy of Tacoma, Washington; one sister Betty Fuller and husband Bob of St. Charles, Missouri; 12 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and a host of many relatives and friends.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday at Zion Lutheran Church. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery. Memorials may be given to Zion Lutheran Church, Beloit Lions Club, or VFW Post 6242. Visitation will be from 12:00 P.M. until 7:30 P.M. Friday at the McDonald Funeral Home.
