George proudly served his country during World War II in the United States Army. He was on the front lines fighting against the Japanese in the Battle of Leyete and was awaiting deployment to Japan when the Atomic Bomb was dropped.
On October 17, 1954, he was united in marriage to Mary Lee Smith at Hunter, Kansas. This union was blessed with two daughters Janet and Lynn. They made their home on a farm two miles west of Hunter. There, George enjoyed all his farming but he especially favored wheat harvest. He raised livestock and enjoyed spending numerous hours on his tractor.
Besides farming, George treasured his family and community. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who prided himself in being there for their activities. He was especially proud of all of their accomplishments and loved hearing them sing. Always a strong people person, George served on the Board of Unification and the Sylvan Unified School Board and was proud of the new school building. He served on the Mitchell County Hospital Board of Directors, was the last living charter member of the Hunter Lions Club, was an active member of the Hunter American Legion Post No. 77 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6242 of Beloit. He loved taking bus tours with his wife. He kept a daily log of all his life's activities and prided himself on his organization and book work. George was a good neighbor who was very ready, willing, and eager to lend a hand to others.
George was a confirmed and faithful member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, and generously served in numerous capacities. He instilled the importance of church attendance to his children and grandchildren.
