Gertrude E. Pfefferkorn

December 4, 1913 — November 19, 2011

Gertrude Elizabeth (Wendell) Pfefferkorn, the widow of Carl H. Pfefferkorn, departed this life at the Mitchell County Hospital in Beloit, Kansas on November 19, 2011 at the age of 97.

Gertrude was born December 4th 1913 on the family farm south of Beloit, Kansas to Charles F. and Gertrude A. (Ludwig) Wendell. She attended St. John's Grade and High School, graduating with the class of 1932.

After graduation she began her career in hospital work as a nurses aide. Moving back east she worked at hospitals in Chicago, Ohio, and Indiana. It was while working in Indiana that she met the Pfefferkorn family and later Carl, their son who was home on furlough from World War II. A year later they were united in marriage at St. Xavier Catholic Cathedral in Alexandria, Louisiana. After the war they moved back to Beloit, Gertrude's home town where they remained until death.

Upon her return home, Gertrude began working at the Mitchell County Hospital as a nurse's aide. As her children began attending school, she quit working at the hospital for a short time and began working as a maid at the Mainliner Motel, so she would have more time at home with her family. But it was her love of caring for the sick and infirmed that soon brought her back to the Hospital. She never again left hospital work. In 1983, she retired with over 40 years of service to the residents of Beloit.

In her spare time, she enjoyed playing cards and board games with family and friends and it was not unusual for her to get the family started on some type of game during get togethers. She also liked tent camping, and there were many memorable summers of roughing it at lakes in the area and on at least one occasion a vacation through Ozarks. She was a member of St. John's Catholic Church in Beloit and belonged to the Legion of Mary and the Blue Army.

Gertrude was preceded in death by her husband Carl Pfefferkorn, parents Charles and Gertrude Wendell; sisters Lucille Heidrick, Margaret Heidrick, Rosemary Winters, Sister of the Precious Blood Marguerite (Frances Wendell); brothers Kenneth, Wilfred (Butch) and James Wendell.

She is survived by her younger brother George Wendell, her children Carla Younger, Donald Pfefferkorn, Diane Walle, and John Pfefferkorn. In addition, surviving are 13 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

Funeral Services will held at 10 AM Wednesday at St. John's Catholic Church with burial in St. John's Cemetery. Memorials may be given to Masses or the Ladies Guild. Visitation will be from 9 AM until 8 PM Tuesday at the McDonald Funeral Home where the Parish Vigil and Rosary will be held at 7 PM.
