Gwendaline Alice Torr, the daughter of Edric and Alice Ellen Bichel Moate, was born October 22, 1927 at Courtland, Kansas. She departed this life of 87 years early Saturday at the Mitchell County Hospital in Beloit, Kansas.
"Gwen" or "Babe", as she was known by all who knew and loved her, lived most of her life in Beloit. On November 11, 1945, she was united in marriage to Neil Junior Torr at the home of his parents in Beloit. This happy union was blessed with four children Susanna, Mark, and twins Jill and Jan. They made their home for many years at 710 North Walnut in Beloit.
In the middle 1960's, Neil and Gwen purchased the former Eldringhoff Food Store in downtown Beloit, and eventually changed the name to Torr's HyKlas Food Store. Her people loving personality along with a genuine desire to please customers made them very successful until their retirement in 1994.
Always happy, upbeat, Gwen was a pleasure to be around and she was genuinely interested in people. Gwen was very proud of her family and was passionate about genealogy; her father emigrated with his parents from England, and she spent many happy hours researching her family roots. She was very fond of babies and loved her grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchild. Animals, especially cats and puppies always brought a smile to her face. Gwen loved traveling and enjoyed many vacations with Neil.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6242 Auxiliary.
Gwen was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter Jan who died at age two months; one son Gary Mark Torr; her son-in-law David Goddard, and one granddaughter Angela Goddard.
Left to mourn her passing and celebrate her life are her husband Neil Torr of the home; children Susanna Hogan and husband Bruce of Wichita, Kansas, Jill Goddard of Salina, Kansas; daughter-in-law Kathy Torr of Beloit; seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, and many friends.
