Hal Steiner

October 27, 1929 — May 25, 2015

Harold D. "Hal" Steiner was born on October 27, 1929 in Crete, Nebraska, the son of Alvin W. and Pauline M. (Weiss) Steiner. He died on Monday, May 25, 2015 at the Mitchell County Hospital in Beloit, Kansas at the age of 85.
He attended Crete Public Schools in his youth, and graduated from Crete High School in 1947. While in High School, he was a member of football, basketball and track team, and was the captain of the track team, which was the first class to win a state championship. He was also a member of Student Council. During the summers, he served local softball teams. After high school, entered Doane College where he played football; and ran track for two years. Volunteered for draft during the Korean War, spent 2 years n the Army, most of which was at Letterman Army Hospital in San Francisco. Upon serving his 2 years, returned home to Crete and re-entered Doane to earn his college degree.
In the summer of 1953 Hal met Bonnie Altman of Wilber, NE. Courtship led to marriage in June 1954. This union led to three children, Susan, Tim, and Stormy. He started his insurance career with State Farm in 1955 as a Regional Office Underwriter. Transferred from Lincoln, NE to Columbia, MO and was promoted to Underwriting Supervisor. He then got the itch to be a self employed agent with State Farm. Went from Columbia to Salina, KS for time, when an opening came about in Beloit, KS, and had his own agency for 30 plus years.
Hal was a 50 year member of Zion Lutheran Church where he once served as council president. He also was a 50 plus year member and past president of the Beloit Lions Club, and a member of the Masonic Lodge in his hometown of Crete, NE. Hal umpired Lion's Club youth baseball. He served on the Beloit School Board several years.
Hal is survived by his wife Bonnie (Altman), Daughter Susan and son-in-law Peter Rahe, daughter Stormy and son-in-law Roger Marshall, daughter-in-Law Mary (Olsen) Steiner; grandchildren Cassie Steiner Hays (Bret), Michael "Mick" Steiner, Hannah Rahe, Daniel Rahe; sister Janice and brother-in-law Don Zeiss; brother-in-law, Lyle Altman; sister-in-law, Twila Wanek; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his son Tim, parents, brother Dick Steiner, parents-in-law Bob and Lydia Altman, brother in law Gene Wanek, sister in law Barb Altman and nephew Jerry Wanek.

A memorial service will take place at 2 PM Saturday, May 30 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Beloit, followed by a reception at the Church. Memorials may be given to the Church, Doane College, or the Post Rock Humane Society. Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation.
