Harold Tice Maxwell was born on November 22, 1917 on the family farm near Beloit, Kansas, the son of Harry R. and Jenny F. Tice Maxwell. He died Sunday, April 19, 2009 in the Mitchell County Hospital in Beloit at the age of 91 years, 4 months, and 27 days.
He grew up in Mitchell County and attended elementary school in Beloit. He graduated from Simpson High School in 1935, and was the last survivor from his graduating class.
On July 28, 1940, he was united in marriage with Eris L. West in Beloit. To this union were born a son, Tom, and a daughter, Shirley. They were privileged to spend nearly 43 years of marriage together until her death in February 1983.
During World War II, Harold worked for Boeing Aircraft. From 1943 to 1961, he farmed southwest of Beloit before moving to town, where he went to work as a plumber for 30 years at Beloit Plumbing.
He was married to Charlotte Purvis-Keener in 1984 in Beloit.
Harold loved his grandkids and great grandkids and supported their activities. He also loved fishing, playing cards, and dancing. His dry sense of humor was his endearing quality, and he was always up for corny jokes.
He was a member of the Elks and Moose Lodges, as well as the Pleasant View Methodist Church.
In addition to his first wife, Eris, he was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, H. Arthur Maxwell; and his sister, Minnie Frances (Susie) Peterson.
Harold is survived by his wife, Charlotte, of the home; his son, Tom Maxwell and his wife Mary of Beloit; his daughter, Shirley Sahlfeld and her husband Tony of Knob Noster, Missouri; two step-children, Jacquylyne Stelter and her husband Ken of Minneapolis, Kansas, and James Keener and his wife Pamela of Chapman; 5 grandchildren, Jesse Sahlfeld and his wife Cathy of Knob Noster, Jennifer Nyberg and her husband Tracy of Zeeland, Michigan, Michael Maxwell and his wife Stacey of Kasson, Minnesota, Mark Maxwell and his wife Katy of Lawrence, and Matthew Maxwell and his wife Rachel of Belton, Missouri; 6 step grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren, Brandi and Orie Sahlfeld; Madysen, Seth, Braden, and Zade Nyberg; CheyAnne and Dalton Maxwell; Lacy, Caly, Jacob, and Miley Maxwell; and Isaac, Adelaide, and Cedric Maxwell; 13 step great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM Wednesday, April 22 at the McDonald Funeral Home in Beloit followed by burial in Elmwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM Tuesday at the funeral home, where the family will greet friends from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM. Memorials may be given to the Mitchell County Hospital or Solomon Valley Hospice.
