Harold "Keith" Shamburg

December 2, 1935 — June 26, 2023

Beloit

Harold "Keith" Shamburg passed to his heavenly home on June 26, 2023. He was born to Harold and Irene Shamburg December 2, 1935 in Scottsville Ks.

The oldest of 3 sons he was the ring leader of many adventures with brothers Vaughn and Ed. The family farmed and also owned Shamburg Oil gas station located in Scottsville which relocated to Beloit on Asherville Road and was known as Shamburg Courts. Later, the business was relocated to Highway 24/14 when the highway 24 bypass was built.  The Waconda Hotel and 24/66 restaurant was added for a full-service truck stop.

Keith grew up playing lots of baseball. Irene insisted her boys be on the same team to reduce the traveling for games and practice. If you had the Shamburg boys on your team, you had a winning season. Keith went on to played semi pro baseball when he was older.

Keith graduated from Beloit high school in 1953 along with his wife to be, Dorinda Jean Mears. He attended Kansas State University and played baseball for one year.

Dorinda remained at Kansas State while Keith moved to Denver to work for his Uncle, Pat Michels, doing construction work. Keith also drove an ambulance in Denver. A safe, efficient driver, he had figured out the exact speed to drive in order to make all the green lights. He also worked at Jess Hayes' gas station and developed a lifelong friendship with Jess and Betty Hayes.

Keith and Dorinda married June 1957 in Beloit. They returned to Denver where Keith continued his employment with Jess Hayes while Dorinda taught elementary school. Keith and Dorinda returned to Beloit in 1959. To this union, three children were born. Greg Shamburg (Kris), Stacy Lattin (Craig) and Mike Shamburg (Peg). Ten grandchildren Kim Martin (Micheal) Kelly Reling (Nick) Audrey Wessling (Carter) Aaron Shamburg (Kailee) Sasha Tyson, Nicole Cook (Landon) Nathan Lattin, Paige Shamburg-Kouanou (Otis) Lexi Templonuevo (David) Sierra Shamburg. Also, four great grandchildren. Lucas Martin, Karrigan and Maeve Reling, and Harana Templonuevo.

Upon their return to Beloit, they joined Keiths parents to operate the truck stop at the 24/14 junction.  Soon after, Keith and Vaughn started Bikes Burger Bar Restaurants. They had 54 franchises over 5 states. The brothers decided they needed a plane to keep up and enjoyed flying the Beech Barron all over the region to manage their business. After this business venture, Keith opened Green Shamburg Insurance agency with Lee Green. After selling the agency, Keith then bought into Fuller Chevrolet and sold cars until the early 1980's then selling his share to drive for Shamburg Transport owned by his father. He eventually took over the business and it became Shamburg Brothers Trucking. They added more trucks to haul fuel, rock and grain. Keith and his employees started their days with coffee break at 4 a.m.and formed close friendships. His Son Mike took over this business when Keith semi-retired. His Father, Harold Shamburg passed in 1998 leaving his sons the controlling interest in Shamburg Oil which Harold started in 1936. The boys purchased the shares owned by the Harnett family and hired Keith's son, Mike, to manage the station. Mike became the owner and recently sold the business to the Crumbaker family.

Keith was a member of the First United Methodist Church where he served as a junior high Sunday school teacher. He was also one of the founding members of the Beloit Booster Club. He announced Beloit High games on the radio with much enthusiasm and commentary. Keith enjoyed music and played drums and keyboard for the band, The New Arrangement, along with Judd Thierolf, Lyle McHenry, JC Fuller, Rex Wagoner and Marsha Jones.

He was a great neighbor and friend, keeping everyone's lives interesting with his jokes and pranks. He and Don Allphin patrolled the community, chased storms, drank gallons of Banner coffee and played many rounds of golf with their buddies Rick, Pete and Frank.

Keith was a good husband, father, grandad and friend. He loved his family dearly and was present for all of events in their lives. Many of his former employees said they felt like they were treated as family and have many fond memories of Keith.

Our wonderful Dad was a protector, teacher, provider and comforter. As Greg would say, Dad always let you know that he didn't come over on the first boat, it wasn't his first rodeo and nothing good happens after midnight. Stacy remembers, Dad was always in your corner..or...he had you cornered! He was the original life 360. He let you know when you made mistakes but always helped you to learn from them.  Mike remembers the glowing cigarette in the window indicating that Dad was still up even though there wasn't a light on for you.

We had some great times. Vacations, sporting events, camping and boating at the lake, the list goes on and on. We fully know now how blessed we were to have him and we will try to carry on with all that he taught us. Dad, you are an Icon to us and your many friends. We will forever be grateful to you for all you have done for us and taught us. Your love and care were a true gift to many.
