Harold Ira VanWey was born on July 11, 1923 in Jewell County, Kansas, the son of Ernest and Susie Schrotenboer VanWey. He died Tuesday, January 12, 2010 at the Golden Living Center in Downs, Kansas at the age of 86 years, 6 months, and 1 day.
Harold grew up on the family farm and attended the Pleasant Hill Country School.
He served in the United States Army in the Philippines and Japan during World War II.
On January 5, 1949, he was united in marriage with Lola Watson in the Odessa Church. Two sons were born to this union. They were privileged to spend 61 years of marriage together.
After their marriage, they lived on a farm north of Cawker City before moving to Ionia. In 1967, they returned to Cawker City, where he farmed and worked for the Jewell County Highway Department.
Harold enjoyed his spare time doing carpentry work. He was always in a positive mood and enjoyed a good joke.
He was a member of the Cawker City United Methodist Church, the VFW Post #6242, and the American Legion Post #379.
Harold was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Wayne Lee.
He is survived by his wife Lola of the home; one son, Chet Ira VanWey; one grandson, Brandon Wayne; two sisters, Faye Doane of Baltimore, Maryland, and Charlotte Peters of Beloit; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM Monday, at the Cawker City United Metjhodist Church with burial at Ionia Cemetery. Memorials may be given for the church or the American Legion. Visitation will be from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM Sunday at the church.
