Hazel Peterson

Hazel Lucille Peterson was born to Charles Sumner Johnson and Jessie Sproul Johnson on September 23, 1917 at Moreland, Kansas. She left this life peacefully to meet her Lord and savior on Monday night, August 3, 2020 at Hilltop Lodge in Beloit, Kansas. She was 102 years old.

After her father's death in 1924, Hazel, her sister Dorothy, and her brother Charles moved with their widowed mother to Beloit. Hazel attended Beloit schools and graduated from Beloit High School in 1935.

After graduation, she was assistant city clerk for 8 ½ years. On February 4, 1945, she was united in marriage to John W. Peterson at First Christian Church in Beloit. Two daughters, Barbara and Joyce, and one son, Ronald were born to this union. The couple had been married 56 years at the time of John's death on March 20, 2001.

From 1946 to 1965, Hazel was a stay at home mom. When she returned to work, she worked for Dr. Collins and Dr. Dobratz, and Dr. Neinsted for 3 ½ years, then she worked at Beloit Five and Dime until she retired in 1973.

Hazel liked to sew and made many of she and her daughters' clothes. She also enjoyed knitting and was an avid reader. After retirement, she and John enjoyed traveling and camping in their RV. After John's death, she and her sister Dorothy enjoyed going to basketball games and playing cards with friends.

Her church and her faith were very important throughout Hazel's life. She was a charter member of Beloit First Christian Church, and the last surviving charter member at the time of her death. She attended the Metallic Bible Study until her move to Hilltop Lodge where she was a resident for seven years. During those seven years, she made many new friends and enjoyed various activities. She was always interested in the lives of others and enjoyed the visits of friends and relatives.

Hazel was preceded in death by her father, mother, sister, and brother. Survivors are her daughters Barbara and husband Larry of Texarkana, Texas and Joyce Young and husband Ronald of Derby, Kansas; son, Ronald Peterson of Sherman, Texas; six grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 2 PM Thursday, August 6 at the Roberts Family Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 9 AM to 5 PM Wednesday, & from 9 AM to service time, with family present from 1-2 on Thursday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Solomon Valley Hospice or the Beloit First Christian Church.
