Helena Christina Cordel was born October 7, 1919 to Frank and Appolonia Streit Ohnsat on a farm west of Tipton, Kansas and departed this life of 93 years Friday, January 18, 2013 at Salina Regional Health Center in Salina, Kansas.
Helena attended Tipton Grade School and graduated from Tipton High School in 1937. During her school years she helped with her family's dairy herd, selling milk and cream to the families of Tipton.
After graduation Helena worked at Raney's Drug Store in Tipton as a soda jerk. In 1942 she moved to Wichita where she worked for Boeing for three years during World War II. At the beginning of her employment she assembled CG-4 Hadrian Gliders and later became a "Rosie The Riveter" building B-29 Bombers.
On June 4, 1946 Helena was united in marriage to Edmund Charles Cordel at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Tipton. Following their marriage, they lived a short time in town, later moving to a farm just east of Tipton until ill health forced them to move to Beloit.
Helena was a full-time homemaker and partner in the family work of farming and stock operations. During their early married years Helena enjoyed keeping chickens and dairy cows, selling eggs and cream to the Tipton Cream Station. Throughout her life, Helena was an exemplary cook, baker, and seamstress. Helena used a unique breadmaking technique to save time on her busy schedule. She baked her bread in 3 pound coffee cans. Helena learned that she could bake twice as many loaves of bread in her oven at one time. Over many years, she perfected her homemade whole wheat bread recipe. Helena baked bread every week and always had bread ready to serve and also had loaves in the freezer so she would never run out. The Cordel kids always enjoyed Helena's bread sliced extra thick with the unique round shape and her kids were always proud to have this special bread used for sandwiches in their lunches.
She was a member of New Life Assembly of God Church in Beloit.
Her husband Edmund died on December 17, 2003. In addition, Helena was preceded in death by her parents, and siblings Ann Arnoldy, Mary Simeon, Margaret Corpstein, John Ohnsat, Caroline Pottberg, Robert Ohnsat, Matilda Stoffel, and Katherine Bulthaup.
Helena will be deeply missed by her children David Cordel and wife Lori of Beloit, Stephen Cordel and wife Carol of Cawker City, Robert Cordel and wife Lisa of Beloit, Margaret Reinert and husband Don of Wichita, Mary Farrar and husband Larry of Wichita, Adrian Cordel and wife Marla of Beloit; one sister Alice Marie Waldman of Yorba Linda, CA; thirteen grandchildren, eight great grandchildren with one on the way, and a host of many relatives and friends.
Funeral Services will be held at 1:30 PM Wednesday at the New Life Assembly of God Church with Pastor Curt Horton officiating. Burial will follow in St. Boniface Cemetery, Tipton. Memorials may be given to the church. Visitation will be from 9 AM until 8 PM Tuesday, with the family receiving friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at the McDonald Funeral Home.
