Jackie L. Clover was born on March 17, 1942, in Beloit, Kansas, the son of Elwood T. and Evelyn Barnett Clover. He died March 22, 2007, at Mitchell County Hospital Health Services, in Beloit, at the age of 65 years and five days.
Jack grew up and attended school at Glen Elder, graduating in the class of 1960. Jack graduated from Kansas Wesleyan University, in Salina, in 1965.
On August 26, 1962, he was united in marriage to Linda B. Hicks, in Glen Elder. Two children were born to this union Timothy Dale and Todd Alan.
Jack taught and coached at Cawker City and Waconda East High Schools, for thirty-three years. He coached football, basketball, volleyball and track. Jack's football teams compiled an overall record of 125-35-1, winning numerous league and district titles. Jack also coached summer baseball and organized youth basketball camps. Jack coached Tim and Todd in baseball, basketball and football. Jack enjoyed fishing, hunting and gardening, spending numerous hours with his wife and sons. Jack could usually be seen with one of his faithful Pug companions. Jack was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend.
Jack was a member of the Cawker City United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge, Order of the Eastern Star and the Kansas Wesleyan University Athletic Hall of Fame. Jack served as a City Councilman and Mayor of Cawker City.
In 1997, Jack suffered a stroke, leading to the next stage of his life, when he could no longer teach and coach. Jack and Linda traveled across Kansas and spent many hours wrapping twine, and other activities in their capacity as caretakers of the Ball of Twine, making many new friends. Jack developed a cooking hobby leading to countless hours in the kitchen preparing his renowned dishes for many friends and acquaintances. He kept numerous lists of people he had given food to and you were very lucky to be on that list. Everyone that his life touched will miss him. His zest for life was one of his many attributes.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents and nephew Tony Fobes.
He is survived by his wife, Linda, of the home; two sons, Tim Clover and his wife, Becky and their three children, Amanda, Aaron and Alex of Chanute, Kansas; Todd Clover, of Cawker City; sister Carolyn Fobes, Lenexa, Kansas; niece Tammy Sylvester and family, Overland Park, Kansas and sister-in-law Lisa Hicks, Joplin, Missouri.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM Monday, March 26, at the Cawker City United Methodist with burial at Glenwood Cemetery, Glen Elder. Memorials may be given to the church or the Jack Clover Student Athlete Scholarship. Visitation will be from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM Sunday at the Cawker City United Methodist Church. The Waconda Funeral Home, 815 West First, Cawker City, KS 67430, is handling arrangements.
