James Albert Thompson was born July 10, 1925 to Allen and Ethel Wagy Thompson in a log cabin at Perry, Nebraska. He departed this life of 86 years of age Sunday, January 15, 2012 at Via Christi-St. Francis Hospital in Wichita, Kansas after a fall at home.
"Jim", as he was known by all, grew up in nearby McCook, Nebraska where he attended McCook Community College.
On November 27, 1948 he married Phyllis Arlene Coleman at McCook, Nebraska. Four children Lea, Judy, Steven and Janis were born to this happy union.
Jim was a heavy equipment mechanic and came to Beloit with his family in 1970 and taught diesel mechanics at the North Central Kansas Technical College until his retirement in 1991. He would work on anything.
A generous, hardworking person, Jim enjoyed life. While stubborn at times, he loved his work and enjoyed woodworking. He cherished his family and loved taking them on boating expeditions to the lake; he loved water skiing, and at age 75 skied with his son and grandson. Jim also enjoyed riding his Harley. He was known for his homemade peanut brittle and 'nuts and bolts' party mix at Christmas time. His honest, forthright manner will be deeply missed.
Jim was a proud veteran of World War II, having served in the United States Army. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.
His wife Phyllis died in 1989. In addition, he was preceded in death by his parents and infant twin great grandchildren Hadley and Chase Thompson.
Jim will be forever in the hearts of his children Lea Patterson and husband Mel of Albuquerque, NM, Judy Leitner and husband Laney of North Platte, NE, Steve Thompson and wife Peggy of Beloit, Janis Pomeroy and husband Scott of Denver, CO; one sister Alene Rucker of Hastings, NE; 13 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren and many friends.
Funeral Services will be held at 9:00 A.M. Friday, January 20, 2012 at the McDonald Funeral Home. Military Honors will be provided immediately following the services. Burial will be at 2:30 PM in the Memorial Park Cemetery, McCook, Nebraska. Memorials may be given to Solomon Valley Hospice. Visitation will be from 9 AM until 8 PM Thursday at the McDonald Funeral Home.
