James J. Hurley

July 17, 1925 — February 1, 2011

James Joseph Hurley, 85, passed away Tuesday evening, February 1, 2011 at Hilltop Lodge in Beloit, Kansas. Jim was born on the family farm southeast of Glasco on July 17, 1925 to Francis "Frank" Joseph and Wilhelmina "Minnie" Elizabeth Krone Hurley, the sixth of seven children.

Jim attended grade school near his home at Harmony country school before going to Glasco High School where he graduated in 1943. He became the third generation farmer on a homestead established by his grandfather, James J. Hurley in 1870. He cared deeply for the land and did his best to be a responsible and productive farm operator for 57 years. Besides farming, Jim had lifelong interests in music and flying. He earned his private pilot's license in 1944 and shortly thereafter became a charter member of the Kansas Flying Farmers. He maintained a small airport on the farm for several years and especially enjoyed giving people rides in his airplanes on pleasant Sunday afternoons. Several local men learned to fly using Jim's runways during the years after the end of World War II.

Jim and Helen Broberg of Beloit were united in marriage on October 25, 1952. They became the parents of four children Mary, Martha, Alan and Charles who also grew up on the family farm. Jim was active in St. Mary's Catholic Church in Glasco and served on the board of directors of the Delphos COOP Association and the Glasco school board.

Music was an important interest in Jim's life and he was a long-time member of church choirs in Glasco and Beloit, as well as participating in community choir productions in both communities. In March, 2000, Jim and Helen moved to Beloit to retire and pursue leisure and volunteer activities.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Hazel Harton, Virginia (Sister Mary Jane Frances), Willa Bundy, Frances Cooper, Colleen Flynn and a brother Charles who died at birth.

Survivors are his wife Helen of the home; daughters Mary (Roger) Mosher of Wichita, Dr. Martha Hurley, Overland Park, and sons Alan (Janet) Hurley of Highlands Ranch, CO, and Charles (Chris) Hurley, Des Moines, Iowa. He is also survived by 17 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

Father Joseph Kieffer will celebrate the Funeral Mass at 10 AM Saturday, February 5, 2011 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Cremation will follow and private burial of the ashes will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Glasco. Memorials may be given to St. John's Memorial Trust Fund, Solomon Valley Hospice or the Charity of the Donor's Choice. Visitation will be from 9 AM until 8 PM Friday at the McDonald Funeral Home where an evening Scripture Service will be held at 7 o'clock.
