James L. Swartzman

March 24, 1939 — January 7, 2010

James Lee Swartzman was born March 24, 1939 to Paul Henry and Evelyn Delia Barland Swartzman at the family farmhome near Beloit, Kansas. He was released from a lengthy illness Thursday morning, January 7, 2010 at the Mitchell County Hospital in Beloit, Kansas.

Jim, as everyone knew him grew up in Beloit where his parents operated a gasoline station, liquor store and ice plant. He graduated from St. John's High School.

After high school, Jim joined the United States Navy and served four years at Point Mugu Naval Air Station in California as an Aviation Electronics Technician Second Class. He was an airdale aboard the USS Constellation & USS Ticonderoga. Jim worked for a company instrumental in developing the Atlas rocket.

Following his military service, Jim returned to Beloit where he met Nolta Oetting while she was working at the Dairy Queen, eight years later they married on February 25, 1988, and were the proud parents of two sons Zane and Ethan.

Although Jim was a longtime rural mail carrier, he worked for Hund Ready-Mix and the Mitchell County Highway Department.

A kind hearted, people loving person, Jim was very proud of his sons. He and Nolta were very active in the Boy Scouts, serving as troop leaders for many years. Wherever his sons were, Jim was usually not far behind. Jim also had a great interest in history; he was a Civil War buff and frequently watched the History Channel. Jim loved sports and was an avid fan of the KU Jayhawks.

He was a member of St. John's Catholic Church and served as long as he was able.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents.

Left to mourn his passing and celebrate his life are his wife Nolta of the home; sons Zane and Ethan of the home; one brother Steve Swartzman and wife Barbara of Topeka; sisters Avis Swartzman and Paula Swartzman of Topeka along with many relatives and friends.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday at St. John's Catholic Church with burial following in St. John's Cemetery. Memorials may be given to St. John's Education Fund or Solomon Valley Hospice. Friends may call from 9 AM until 4 PM Monday at the McDonald Funeral Home.
