James Joseph Weakley was born on March 16, 1943 in Emporia, Kansas, the son of Dell Roy and Margaret Jennie Lawson Weakley. He died early Tuesday, September 8, 2015 at the Mitchell County Hospital in Beloit, Kansas at the age of 72 years, 5 months, and 23 days.
Jim grew up and attended school in Emporia. He worked at the sale barn at age 14, and also helped his dad break and train horses. He later went to work as a cowboy in the Flint Hills, and did rodeo on the side.
He was united in marriage with Minda Stout, and three children were born to this union, which later dissolved.
In 1972, he married Judy Kay Bronaugh in Emporia. Two sons were born to this union. They were privileged to spend more than 33 years of marriage together.
Following their marriage, Jim and Judy moved to Beloit, where he worked at the feedlot for 20 years. They later moved to Leoti, where he worked as a cowboy. After his retirement in 2010, they moved to Cawker City. He later became ill with Alzheimer's and spent a few months in the Nicol Home in Glasco.
Jim greatly enjoyed working with horses, and loved to teach kids how to ride them. He also enjoyed coon hunting with friends and relatives in his spare time.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother Richard.
Jim is survived by his wife Judy; daughter, Luann McQuitty and husband Shawn of Garden City; four sons, Mark and wife Janelle of Eudora, Paul and wife Brittany of Emporia, Scott and wife Michelle of Manhattan, and Michael of Cawker City; four brothers, Bradley, John, and Dan, all of Emporia, and Terry of Bergman, Arkansas; four sisters, Carolyn of Gardner, Marilyn Iverson of McPherson, Patricia of Emporia, and Linda Crisp of Emporia; 6 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; and a host of friends and nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be at 1:30 PM Saturday, September 19 at the McDonald Funeral Home. Cremation was chosen, and there will be no visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Alzheimer's Association.
