Janice "Jan" Gale Hollerich was born in the Mitchell County Hospital in Beloit, Kansas on August 30, 1949, the daughter of Harold and Betty Thomas McGee. She departed this life in the Mitchell County Hospital amongst her family at the age of 57 years, 5 months, and 28 days on Tuesday, February 27, 2007 on the birthday of her deceased daughter.
Jan grew up on a farm 13 miles east of Hunter, and attended the Georgia Country School before graduating from Beloit High School in the Class of 1967. She then attended Cosmetology College in Manhattan. She worked in Salina and Beloit until moving to Tipton.
On June 2, 1979, she was united in marriage to Joe Hollerich in the St. Boniface Catholic Church in Tipton. To this union, two children, Cody and Ciera, were born.
Jan worked at the Downs grocery store for two years before starting her employment for USD 272, working as a janitor, and later becoming the head cook. After 19 years of employment with USD 272, the elementary school in Tipton was closed. She then started employment with the Tipton Catholic High School and the Tipton Christian School, where she was instrumental in helping to set up the school lunch program. She worked as the head cook and in the Catholic School lunch program until February 3, when she became too weak to continue working.
Jan was a strong and courageous fighter – fighting cancer on and off for 15 years, and accepting her illness with a positive attitude while still trying to keep her family going, to keep her hard work ethics at her job, and to keep her large yard mowed with everything in place.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Ciera on September 11, 1992.
Jan is survived by her husband, Joe of the home; her son, Cody of the home; her parents, Harold and Betty McGee of Beloit; one brother, Jim McGee and his wife, Glenna of Garden City; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends in the Tipton community.
