Jere Max "Frenchie" DeMars passed away on Wednesday, April 1, 2015 at the Nicol Home, Glasco, KS at the age of 74.
Jere was born July 28, 1940 in Miltonvale, Kansas, the oldest of four children, to the late Hector and Marjorie Downey DeMars.
He graduated from Glasco High School in 1958 and attended Emporia State Teachers College. He joined the United States Army in 1961 and was stationed in France as a medical corpsman where he learned to speak fluent French until his discharge in 1964.
Jere married Nancy Anderson on February 6, 1970 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Glasco and to this union two children were born.
Frenchie, as everyone who knew him called him, worked for the Cloud County Highway Department as a heavy equipment operator from 1976 until his retirement in 2002 due to health reasons.
Frenchie was a kind and big hearted man who didn't know a stranger, and if given the opportunity would always joke and speak fluent French to anyone he could. His grandchildren brought him great joy and he never missed an opportunity to be at any of their events if he could attend.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Hector and Marjorie DeMars; and sister and brother-in-law Mary Alice and Jim White.
Survivors include his wife Nancy of 45 years, Glasco; son William "Bill" DeMars, Glasco and significant other, Rejean Henry, Agra; daughter Stephanie and husband Leland Baxa, Osborne; three grandsons Kyle and Jeffery DeMars, Glasco and Jakob DeMars, Osborne; one granddaughter, Ashton Baxa, Osborne; sister Jill and husband Leland Howerton, Manhattan, KS; brother Marte DeMars and wife Jeanette, Milford, KS; sisters-in-law Vicki (Don) Burhardt, Phoenix, AL; Mary (David) Marlatp, Wymore, NE; brother-in-law Ray Basart, Clay Center, KS; nieces, nephews and a host of other family and friends.
The Parish Vigil and Rosary service will be held at 7:00 P.M. Sunday at the Dean Funeral Home. Cremation will follow the service. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M. Monday, April 6, 2015 at St. Mary's Catholic Church by Father Joseph Kieffer. Interment of the ashes with military honors will be held at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, April 11, 2015 in the Glasco Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the St. Mary's Catholic Church or the Glasco VFW Post 7697. Friends may call from 4:00 P.M. until service time on Sunday at the Dean Funeral Home.
