Joe C. Simmons

September 17, 1927 — July 20, 2013

Joseph Chesley Simmons, the youngest of four children born to Chester Frank and Leota Agnes Pruitt Simmons, was born September 19, 1927 on the family farm in the Saltville community near Barnard. His life of 85 years ended Saturday morning, July 20, 2013 at Hilltop Lodge following a long illness.

"Joe", as everyone knew him, attended Georgia District No. 109 Rural School and graduated from Beloit High School in the Class of 1945.

Farming came naturally for him, and for many years loved farming the Simmons Farm. Utilizing a see what the penny will do before you call up the nickel and making do with your resources at hand philosophy, Joe made the Simmons farm efficient and economically viable. He took pride in the crops he grew and the cattle he raised. The onset of MS in the early 1970's forced him to scale his farming operations back; ultimately his health forced him to retire completely in 1988. After retirement he enjoyed going out and taking care of the farmstead.

It was on March 4, 1967 that he married Helen Elizabeth Wright Skinner at First United Methodist Church in Beloit. He became the loving step father to her son James. They built a new ranch home on the Simmons Farm and in 1974 moved it into Beloit where he worked in the Parts Department of the Auto Mechanics at NCKAVTS before retiring in 1984. After his retirement, they enjoyed many bus tours throughout much of the U.S.A.; and from 1987 until 2002 spent the winter months in Harlingen, Texas. In August, 1999 they flew to London to attend their grandson's wedding.

A kindhearted, people loving person, Joe cherished his family and his friends. He treasured his wife Helen and was always concerned about her welfare. He always enjoyed his nieces and nephews and was always looking forward to their visits. Joe was a member of the Barnard Lions Club, and served as President of the Farmway Credit Union for fifteen years. He also enjoyed membership in the former Beloit Optimist Club.

He was baptized into Christ and was a member of the Saltville Presbyterian Church and after its closure became a member of the Beloit United Methodist Church.

His parents, an infant brother Jamie, and an infant grandson Donald James Skinner preceded him in death.

Left to mourn his passing and celebrate his life are his beloved wife Helen of the home, one step-son James Skinner and wife Janice of Hot Springs Village, AR; two sisters Frances McDonald of Prairie Village, KS, Phyllis Capogna of Royal Oak, MI; one grandson Brett Skinner, one great grandson Wynn Skinner all of Wellington, New Zealand; many nieces and nephews and friends.

Funeral Services will be held at 1:30 P.M. Wednesday at the McDonald Funeral Home with Rev. Tim Ault-Duell officiating. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery. Memorials may be given to Solomon Valley Hospice or the First United Methodist Church. Visitation will be from 9 AM until 8 PM Tuesday at the McDonald Funeral Home. The casket will remain closed.
