John Robert Bottom was born February 18, 1930 to Bert Rural and Carolyn Hawkinson Bottom at Concordia, Kansas and died early Tuesday, December 8, 2009 at Salina Regional Medical Center after a rather long illness.
John grew up in nearby Clyde, Kansas and his family moved to Gaylord, Kansas when he was a sophomore in high school. After his graduation, he continued his education at Fort Hays State University where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and a Masters degree in Education.
On October 18, 1948 he married Frances June Grisier at Hays, Kansas. Three children Robert, Marnie, and Carol were born to this union.
Mister Bottom, as his students and colleagues addressed him, began teaching in a one room school at Claudell, Kansas, and ultimately landed in Beloit in July, 1968. There, he served as Superintendent for USD 273 and with a clear vision, and guided the District through tumultuous times culminating with the construction of the new Beloit Jr-Sr High School. He retired in 1990.
A man of few words, you always knew where you stood with him as he was quick to think, proper and confident to speak. John was very practical and frugal in his approach to life, be it behind the desk or on the lake fishing. He loved the outdoors, always looking forward to his next hunting and fishing expedition.
He was a member of the Methodist Church.
His parents, one son Robert, and one daughter Marnie Arnhold preceded him in death.
Survivors who mourn his passing are his wife June of the home, one daughter Carol Bottom of Marshalltown, Iowa, one brother Ralph Bottom and wife Patsy of Morland, Kansas, three grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Memorial Services will be held at 10 AM Monday, December 14, 2009 at the McDonald Funeral Home with Pastor Glenn Fogo officiating. Private burial of the ashes will be in the Gaylord Cemetery. The family requests memorials be given to the Beloit Jr-Sr High School Library. There will be no visitation.
