John Charles Schoen was born on August 14, 1934 on the family farm north of Cawker City, Kansas, to Frederick E. and Velda I. (Hotle) Schoen. He died on Thursday, December 28, 2017 at the Mitchell County Hospital in Beloit, Kansas at the age of 83 years, 4 months, and 14 days.
John was a lifetime resident of Cawker City, where he attended school and graduated from Cawker City High School. He greatly enjoyed sports and experienced success as a good athlete in various sports. Following high school, he attended Fort Hays State College before returning home to work on the family farm.
John worked for the City of Cawker City for about 10 years before dedicating himself fulltime to farming and ranching until retirement. His greatest passion was the cattle business. He loved working with cattle and enjoyed going to the surrounding sale barns on a regular basis where he was happiest buying and selling cattle and visiting with his many cattleman friends.
On December 5, 1954, he was united in marriage with Janice Lomax. Four children were born to this union, which later dissolved. On February 5, 1970, John married Lois Cooper, and they spent more than 35 years of marriage together until her death in June, 2005.
John was a member of the Elks Lodge and the Cawker City United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois, his parents, brother-in-law, Phil Thull and step-daughter-in-law Melody Cooper.
John is survived by his children Steve (Liliana) of Chicago, Stan (Denise) of Cawker City, Stuart (Julie) of Glen Elder, and Stacey (James) Reese of Beloit; two sisters, Phyllis Thull of Beloit and Joyce (Mike) Heller of California; seven grandchildren, Connor Schoen, John Schoen, Chelsea, Chynna and Chancelor Sweat, Erin (Nathan) Redeker and Dalton Schoen; three great grandchildren, Raylan Basso, Bentley Sweat, and Lauren Redeker; step-sons Mike (Tammy) Cooper of Beloit and Bruce Cooper of Beloit; four step-grandchildren, Michelle (Trenton) Harr, Pepper (Jeff) Roberg, and Alex and Porsche Cooper; and three step-great grandchildren, Dairiahna Harr, and Lexie and Courtney Roberg; and many nieces and nephews.
