Kathryn Avis Twaddell

Kathryn Avis (Overman) Twaddell, 92 of Beloit, Kansas, died Wednesday, September 1, 2010 at Stoneybrook Assisted Living Center in Manhattan, Kansas.

She was born February 26, 1918 to Charles Martin and Sylvia Bell Dawes Overman on a farm near Asherville. She attended school at Simpson and Mankato, graduating from Mankato High School.

On June 16, 1938 she was united in marriage to Laurence Eldon Twaddell at the home of her parents. Four children Kathryn, Sylvia, John, and Mary were born to this union.

Avis, as everyone knew her, was a homemaker with many hobbies and interests that included quilting, sewing, reading and gardening. She enjoyed her family and friends and always enjoyed the entire family coming home for Christmas.

She was a member of the Pleasant View United Methodist Church near Beloit. There, she was a member of the United Methodist Women, served as a District Officer and attended National Meetings, one of which was in New York city. In addition, she was a Sunday School teacher. She and Laurence were active in prayer groups.

Avis was a 4-H Leader. She belonged to many clubs including the EHU, HDU, Rural Anns, Nifty Needle Club and the Garden Club.

Her parents, one brother Orlin Overman, sisters Leone Melton and Marge Pearson, and her son John Eldon Twaddell preceded her in death.

Avis is survived by her husband Laurence now of Stoneybrook Assisted Living in Manhattan; daughters Kathryn Petheram and husband Harry, Austin, TX, Sylvia Scott and husband Clyde of Manhattan, Mary Carpenter and husband Bill of Onaga, one daughter-in-law Carol Twaddell Smusz and husband Walter of Jefferson, CO; 11 grandchildren Bonnie Petheram, Cindy Petheram, Mark Petheram & wife Tammy, Sue Petheram & husband Mark St. Andre, Eric Scott & wife Heather, Curtis Scott & wife Laurie, Brett Scott & wife Tracy, Michell Colburn & husband Nathan, John Martin Twaddell & wife Jolea, Catie Carpenter & fiancé Kyle Shaffer, Chris Carpenter; 14 great grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM Tuesday, September 7 at the Pleasant View Church. Visitation will be from 1:00 PM to 8:00 PM Monday at the McDonald Funeral Home. Memorials may be given to the Pleasant View Church.
