Larry Lee Gaskill was born on October 29, 1938 in Beloit, Kansas, the son of Stanley and Lorraine Winkel Gaskill. He died unexpectedly on Monday, August 18, 2025 at the Mitchell County Hospital in Beloit at the age of 86.
He grew up in Beloit, where he attended schools and later graduated from Beloit High School in 1957. While in high school, he excelled in many sports including track, baseball, basketball, tennis, and diving.
Following graduation, he joined the United States Army, where he served as a master tank gunner on the German border. After his service, he returned to Beloit, where he met his future wife, Bonnie Mick while cruising Mill Street. They married on November 17, 1962, and three children, Brian, Brenda, and Lisa were born to this union. They were privileged to spend nearly 56 years together until her death in September, 2018.
Larry loved working with numbers and spent many years of his life in the surveying industry. He spent 12 years working for the US Geological Survey Team as preliminary/construction surveyor during the building of the Glen Elder Dam. After the dam was built, he was offered a job with the Bureau of Reclamation as a lead surveyor for 15 dams in 3 states and redoing canal alignments.
He spent the last 12 years of his career working as a supervisor at the Glen Elder Dam while still being lead surveyor for all 3 states. During the last couple of years of work, Bonnie traveled with Larry on many of his surveying jobs. He retired the year following the flood of 1993.
In his spare time, Larry enjoyed wood-working, and he even built the home they have lived in for so many years. He also made lots of furniture throughout the years for himself and his children.
He loved going on vacations and his favorite was the yearly trip to Branson. Larry also spent a lot of time taking care of his lawn, working in his shop as well as spending time with his grandkids, and nieces and nephews. He was an ornery soul, and liked to tell stories and make people laugh.
In addition to his wife, Bonnie, he was preceded in death by his parents; and his sister, Sharon Shelton.
Larry is survived by his children, Brian and his wife Shelly of Salina, Brenda and her husband Frank Hollaway, and Lisa and her husband Danny Seamans, all of Beloit; two grandchildren, Zach Gaskill and his wife Bell, and Luke Gaskill and friend Greyson, great-grandson, Maverick; and a host of other relatives and friends.
