Lawrence Lee Heiman was born August 19, 1936 to Lawrence F. and Josephine A. Heidrick Heiman on the Zimmerman farm eight miles south of Beloit, Kansas. He died Monday, December 7, 2015 at the Mitchell County Hospital in Beloit at the age of 79.
Larry, as he was known and loved by all, took responsibility on his parent's farm at a young age herding sheep and driving a D John Deere to plow. He attended Laban Creek School through 8th grade. There, he was involved in the Bar 4 Ranch Quartet, playing the wash board. He went on to Beloit Public School getting very involved with the local Future Farmers of America. Larry was selected to accompany the state FFA tour in May of 1953 for his sheep handling project. He enjoyed hunting and playing baseball, even playing for the Amateur Baseball League of America during the summer of 1954.
Larry joined the military in the mid-1950's and was trained as a paratrooper but was involved in clean up reconnaissance in Korea, Germany, and France. He came back to the United States in 1962 and started work for the Firestone Tire Company in Wichita, KS. He later owned Wabash Tire Company until he moved back to Beloit in the early 1980's. While in Beloit, Larry worked for KDOT until he retired in 1998. He enjoyed retirement by keeping a small herd of cattle for a couple of years but sold them off to get into rental houses. He still enjoyed going out to the family farm to help when he was able. He was an avid KU fan, ever missing a basketball game.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Josephine Heiman, brothers Dean and Richard Heiman; one son Chris Heiman; his wife Rita Heiman; step son Darrel Rowlison.
Larry is survived by his wife Mildred of the home; children Jimmy Heiman of Conway Springs, KS, Brian Heiman of Wichita, KS; step children Duane & Dee Rowlison; Don & Rita Rowlison of Beloit. John & Val Griffin of Glasco, Alice Kinen of St. Francis, Brenda & Dallas McDuffee of Glasco, Roberta & Vernon Reinking of Smith Center; siblings Marilyn and Chuck Peterson of Beloit, David & Ann Heiman of Waynesville, GA. Larry had four grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and there are also several step grandchildren and step great-grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Friday, December 11, 2015 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with burial in St. John's Cemetery. Memorials may be given to St. John's Memorial Trust Fund. Visitation will be from 9:00 A.M. until 8:00 P.M. Thursday at the McDonald Funeral Home where the Parish Vigil and Rosary will be held at 7:00 P.M.
