Laurence Eldon Twaddell was born July 23, 1914 to Harvey Oren and Cecelia Ann Hughes Twaddell on a farm in Mitchell County, Kansas. He passed away Thursday, September 11, 2014 in Manhattan, Kansas at the age of 100 years.
He grew up on a farm, attended several country schools and graduated from Beloit High School. He also
obtained a Normal School Certificate enabling him to teach school.
On June 16, 1938 he was united in marriage to Kathryn Avis Overman. To this union were born four children—Kathryn Ann, Sylvia Lynn, John Eldon, and Mary Kay.
Laurence was a farmer all of his life. He used the most progressive farming methods available such as waterways, shelter belts, and terracing. He was a good mechanic also—making some of his own farm machinery. Farm Bureau, the Co-op, Pleasant View United Methodist Church, 4-H youth and other organizations all benefitted from his participation and leadership. Tractors for our Daily Bread was a favorite organization he helped start locally and strongly supported.
He was preceded in death by his wife Avis; one brother Harmon Twaddell and one son John Twaddell.
He is survived by three daughters, Kathryn Petheram and husband Harry of Austin, TX, Sylvia Scott and husband Clyde of Manhattan, KS, Mary Carpenter and husband Bill of Onaga, KS; his daughter-in-law Carol Twaddell Smusz and husband Walt of Jefferson, CO. Laurence has eleven grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren with the last one born on his 100th birthday. Grandchildren and great grandchildren are Bonnie Petheram, Cindy Petheram, Mark and Tammy Petheram, Megan and Abby, Susie Petheram-St. Andre and Mark St. Andre, Julia and Evan, Eric and Heather Scott, Logan, Laney and DJ Denzien, Curtis and Laurie Scott, Sophie and Sydney, Brett and Tracy Scott, Tristen, Taryn and Trey, Nathan and Michelle Colburn and Abby, John Martin and Jolea, Ian, Gabe, and Piper, Kyle and Catie Schaffer and Callihan, Chris and Amanda Britton-Carpenter.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Monday at the Pleasant View United Methodist Church south of Beloit with burial in the church cemetery. Memorials may be given to the church or Tractors For Our Daily Bread. Visitation will be from 12:00 P.M. until service time at the church.
