Leland Loren Gates was born on November 23, 1918 on a farm in Mitchell County, the son of Harry and Rilla McKee Gates. He died Friday, May 26, 2006 at the Mitchell County Hospital Long Term Care Unit in Beloit at the age of 87 years, 6 months, and 3 days.
Leland grew up in the country, attending Center R-12 grade school before graduating from Beloit High School in 1936. Following graduation, he attended one year at Sterling College in Sterling, Kansas.
On October 10, 1943, he was united in marriage to Kathryn McKee at the home of her parents. One son and one daughter were born to this union. The couple made their home in the farming community southwest of Beloit until 1984, when they moved to Beloit. They were privileged to spend more than 57 years of marriage together until her death in January of 2001.
Leland was always a farmer, and enjoyed working the land and growing crops, while also keeping a close eye on the weather and the markets. He also greatly enjoyed bowling, horseshoes, and volleyball, and had a great interest in taking kids hunting and fishing, and hosting several pheasant hunts. During their retirement years, Leland and Kathryn enjoyed traveling with friends to Oregon, Florida, and Texas.
He was a devoted member of the Greenmound Church of Christ, serving as a Bible teacher and the treasurer.
Leland was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Kathryn; one brother, Ancil; and five sisters, Velma Seaman, Clela Wehl, Margaret Tice, Geneva Fuller, and an infant, Justina.
He is survived by his son, Jim Gates and his wife Lynne of Beloit; one daughter, Mary Sue Hull and her husband Tom of Beloit; two sisters, Zola Shull and Marjorie Scoggan, both of Beloit; five grandchildren, Brian Gates and his wife Julie, Amy Farthing and her husband Lance, Jackie Dellinger and her husband David, Lisa Peters and her husband Shannon, and Jill Grauerholz and her husband Enos; 11 great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM Tuesday, May 30, 2006 at McDonald Funeral Home, with burial in Elmwood Cemetery in Beloit. Visitation will be from 1:00 PM to 8:00 PM Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to the Church of Christ or Solomon Valley Hospice.
