Emery Leland McCune was born May 31, 1929 to George Emery and Meneme Lavernia Crouch McCune on a farm west of Beloit, Kansas. He departed this life of 77 years, 8 months, and 26 days late Monday evening, February 26, 2007 at Salina Regional Health Center in Salina, Kansas.
Leland, as everyone knew him grew up on his parent's farm and graduated from Beloit High School in the Class of 1947. He worked as a farm laborer and other jobs for area farmers until he started working at the Beloit Post Office on April 1, 1950.
On January 16, 1952, he was inducted into the United States Army, trained for 16 weeks with the 101st Airborne Infantry at Camp Breckenridge, Kentucky, and was sent to Korea where he served for approximately 18 months, part of which was served with his twin brother, Leroy. Leland was separated from active duty in December, 1953 and transferred to the Army Inactive Reserve for the next six years.
After his honorable discharge, he returned to the post office where he worked 42 years and 5 months and retired in September, 1992.
On October 5, 1949 he married Margaret Louise Cliff, and to this union three sons Shawn, Shane, and Shannon were born. Margaret died on July 1, 1996 and on May 31, 1998 he married Sandra Nell Slipsager at Bull Head City, Arizona and became the step father to her daughter, Lori.
A kind hearted, hard working person, Leland will be remembered as one who was always there for people. He loved his job with the United States Postal Service and was always eager to serve the customer. He gave his "all" to his family, always making sure their needs were met, and he freely gave of his time helping his sons with their baseball endeavors. He loved the outside, took many an enjoyable camping & fishing trip with his family to Lake Waconda, and also loved working in his garden. He was very close to his brother George and twin brother Leroy and their families. Besides family, Leland was very handy and enjoyed home repair. When the projects were all finished, he loved traveling and seeing as much of the country as possible.
He was a proud veteran of the Korean Conflict, and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He was preceded in death by his first wife Margaret in 1996, his parents, one sister Theo Peters, and a twin brother Leroy.
Left to mourn his passing are his wife Sandra of the home; sons Shawn and wife Vickie of Salina, Shane McCune of Manhattan, Shannon McCune of Salina; a step daughter Lori Winter and husband Ron of Wichita; one brother George McCune and wife Kathy of Wichita; a sister-in-law Millie McCune-Jones and husband Bob of Beloit, four step grandchildren, one step great grandchildren; a host of many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:30 P.M. Friday, March 2, 2007 at the McDonald Funeral Home with Pastor Bruce Keck officiating. Interment will follow in Elmwood Cemetery with military rites.
Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society or the Zion Lutheran Church. Friends may call from 9:00 A.M. until 8:00 P.M. Thursday at the McDonald Funeral Home.
