Leon Theodore Amberg was born on August 24, 1913 in Kansas City, Missouri, the son of Herman and Vivian Henrickson Amberg. He died early Sunday morning, February 19, 2006 at the Salina Regional Health Center in Salina, Kansas at the age of 92 years, 5 months, and 26 days.
In 1919, Leon moved with his family to Glasco. He attended country school east of Glasco before graduating from Glasco Rural High School in 1931. He later went to Business College at Midland College in Fremont, Nebraska.
Leon served as a postal clerk in the Glasco Post Office from 1939 to 1941.
In 1941, he was united in marriage with Lucy Grinage. Two children, Carla Jean and Ronald Theodore, were born to this union.
Leon enlisted in the Navy at the Naval Air Station in Hutchinson in 1941. He was assigned to the Naval postal service, achieving a first class rating MAM 1st Class. He also served as postal clerk at the Naval Air Station in the Carrier Aircraft Service Unit (CASU) at Oxnard, California, and on the Island of Saipan in the Pacific as postal clerk of the island-based CASU. He continued in the service until 1945, before resuming farming with his father, and making that his lifetime occupation.
After Lucy died in 1976, he retired and built a home in Glasco, where he lived with his father. In 1980, he was married to Betty King, who later died in 2002.
Leon was a member of the Glasco United Methodist Church, where he served as a board member for several years, and sang in the choir for over 30 years. He was an active member and past president of the Glasco Senior Citizens Club, and also served as treasurer on the Cloud County Commission on Aging.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Lucy; and his second wife, Betty.
Leon is survived by his son, Ronald of Garland, Texas; his daughter, Carla Wisbey and her husband Dale of Glasco; four step-sons, Bob King and his wife Marilyn of Mystic, Iowa, Ken King and his wife Sharon of Redmond, Washington, Phil King and his wife Judy of St. Paul, Minnesota, and Russell King and his wife Mary of Parsons, Kansas; 10 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; 3 great- great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 AM Thursday, February 23, at the Glasco United Methodist Church with burial in Bethel Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM Wednesday at the Dean Funeral Home. Memorials may be given to the church or the Scleroderma Foundation.
