Lila Aileen Mehl, daughter of Oscar Nelson and Hettie Aileen Treaster, was born May 28, 1922 at Beloit, Kansas. She died Saturday, December 1, 2007 at Hilltop Lodge in Beloit at the age of 85 years.
Lila grew up on the farm and attended country school. She graduated from Beloit High School with the Class of 1940.
On October 9, 1942, Lila was united in marriage with Thomas John "Tom" Mehl at her parents home south of Beloit and shortly after their marriage, the couple moved to Florida where Tom was stationed in the Army Air Corps. A son and daughter were born during their time in Florida, and in 1945, they moved back to the farm south of Beloit. They had been privileged to spend nearly 63 years of married life together before Tom died in 2005.
Lila was a devoted housewife and mother, caring for the home and the family diligently. Tom always referred to her as his partner on the farm. Any family member or hired hand could attest that she always provided a bountiful and delicious meal, invariably laden with the favorite dishes of those partaking each day. She liked working in her yard and beautiful garden and enjoyed music, making sure that her children were trained in that area. While living on the farm, she attended the Kommunity Kulture Klub and the Nifty Needle Club.
Lila spent her childhood and most of her married years attending Hopewell Presbyterian Church where she was an active member. In later years she held membership in the Beloit Presbyterian Church and the United Methodist Church of Beloit.
Survivors include a son T.J. Mehl, Jr. and wife Joyce of Sorrento, Florida; a daughter Donna Munsey and husband Barry of Beloit; a sister Eloise Campbell and husband Bob of Sterling, Kansas; a brother Arden Treaster and wife Sharon of Beloit; a sister-in-law Tomiko Mehl of Lawrence, Kansas; seven grandchildren Peter Hudson, Carrie Ludwig, Debbie Grimes, Pam Thiessen, Lisa Dunstan, Jeff Farney and Darcy Higgins; 13 great grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
