Lillian Evelyn Dooley was born February 15th, 1912 and she departed this life on August 20th, 2011 at the age of 99 years and six months. She was the third of five children of Ralph Leslie and Louise Kathryn Haseltine Norton, and she was born on her Grandfather Haseltine's homestead about six miles south of Cawker City, Kansas in Carr Creek Township.
Lillian spent her childhood growing up on the farm and attending Haseltine country school. She went to Cawker City High School and was the last surviving member of her graduating class of 1931. Following graduation, she taught for two years in a country school, and then she found employment working for various families in the Mitchell County area. Her experiences as a young adult during the Depression influenced her work ethic and lifestyle for the remainder of her life.
On November 27, 1940 Lillian married Dennis F. Dooley and to this union three children were born—Dean who died shortly after birth, Donna, and Janette. Lillian actively assisted her husband in their farming operation, and she spent many hours each summer canning and preserving produce from her garden and orchard. She enjoyed sewing garments and was particularly fond of recycling leftover material into quilts that she gave to her children and grandchildren. Lillian was involved with several church and community groups including the Miriam Circle and the Quilter's group of Zion Lutheran Church, and she was a 60 year member of the EHU/FCE. She had been a member of her church for approximately 40 years. In her later years she enjoyed the challenge of completing Sudoku puzzles.
Lillian was preceded in death in by her parents, her husband Dennis, her son Dean, one sister Freda Beam and one brother Harold Norton.
Left to mourn her passing and celebrate her life are her daughters Donna Meyer and husband Tom of Clovis, California, Janette Gelroth and husband Joe of Manhattan, Kansas; grandchildren Sarah Ramsey and husband Bill of Wichita, Kansas and Adam Gelroth of Plymouth Vermont; great granddaughter Caitlyn Ramsey, and many treasured friends from her church and her community.
