Lowell Oliver Tipton was born June 20, 1922 to Oliver L. and Lemah A. Kerbaugh Tipton at Beloit, Kansas.
He departed this life of 93 years, 10 months, and 23 days early Friday, May 13, 2016 at Cloud County Health Center in Concordia, Kansas.
Lowell spent his childhood years growing up in his hometown of Beloit. He graduated from Beloit High School in the Class of 1941.
Following his graduation, he worked for Martin Aircraft building airplanes for World War II, and then enlisted in the United States Navy, seeing action in the Pacific Theater aboard the USS Natrona where he was the Captain's bookkeeper. One of the proudest moments of his career was standing on the deck of the ship in Tokyo harbor and seeing one of the planes that he helped build land. He was honorably discharged on April 17, 1946 in Norman, Oklahoma.
A friendly, outgoing person, Lowell had a great love for the railroads, and so he became employed by the Atchison-Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad as a telegrapher and soon became a depot agent, serving both freight and passenger clients. His favorite
assignment was in Norman, Oklahoma where he lived most of his life.
Besides his career with the railroad, he loved his family and photography. Always with his camera in hand, he took countless pictures; among his favorites were of the Oklahoma Sooners football team. This was exciting for him as he became personal friends with longtime coach Barry Switzer.
After many happy years in Norman, he moved to Concordia, Kansas in about 2003 to be near family.
His parents, brother John Tipton, and sisters Olivene and Lois preceded him in death.
Lowell will be deeply missed by his remaining sister Margaret Lesley and husband Lloyd of Mankato, Kansas; many friends and other relatives.
Graveside Services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, May 18, 2016 at Elmwood Cemetery in Beloit with military honors. Memorials may be given to the charity of the donor's choice. Visitation will be from 1:00 P.M. until 5:00 P.M. Tuesday at the McDonald Funeral Home.
