Marian was born September 23, 1919 in Center Township, southwest of Beloit, the daughter of John and Alice Lynch Walter. Her parents named her Alice Marian, but she went by Marian all her life. She died early Wednesday, November 6, 2019 at Hilltop Lodge in Beloit at the age of 100.
She attended Beloit High School and then went to Glen Elder High School to get training to become a teacher. She taught for three years in rural, one room schools in Mitchell County.
Marin married Raymond Farr on September 29, 1940. The couple farmed and raised cattle in the Beloit area until they retired and moved in to Beloit. They were married 69 years before his death in 2009.
She was a member of Hopewell Presbyterian Church and First Presbyterian od Beloit, where she served as a Sunday school teacher, Deacon and Elder. She also served on the rural education board and worked for many years on the election board. Many will remember her for the sandwiches she made at the Blood Drives and worked as a volunteer in the gift shop of the hospital. Other activities with which she was involved were as a 4-H leader, member of Sans Souci Club, HDU, YMW, and UPW.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Hester Ish and Hazel Brumbaugh; brothers, Berton Walter and Bill Walter; and son-in-law, John Wilkey.
Marian is survived by her two daughters, Barbara Harmon and husband Gary of Salina and Phyllis Wilkey of Sterling; seven grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 1 PM Saturday, November 9 at the Roberts Family Funeral Home followed by burial in Elmwood Cemetery. Visitation will be the morning before the service. Memorials may be given to the First Presbyterian Church, Hilltop Lodge, or Solomon Valley Hospice.
