Marie Elizabeth Wessling was born on September 6, 1914 on a farm near Scottsville, Kansas, the daughter of Joseph Augusta and Clara Florence Shadowen Abram. She died Saturday, November 12, 2005 at the Long Term Care Unit of the Mitchell County Hospital in Beloit, Kansas at the age of 91 years, 2 months, and 6 days.
Marie grew up and attended the Gilbert School before graduating from Beloit High School in the Class of 1932.
On October 22, 1940, she was united in marriage to Arnold August Wessling at St. John's Catholic Church in Beloit. Two sons and two daughters were born to this union. After their marriage, they lived on the family farm until moving to Long Beach, California in May of 1965. They returned to Beloit in 1986. They were privileged to spend more than 47 years of marriage together until Arnold's death in March of 1988.
Marie enjoyed sewing and quilting, cooking, candle wicking, playing cards, raising children, and spending time with her family. She was a member of the St. John's Catholic Church, and the Ladies Guild.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Arnold; one granddaughter, Robin Wessling; four brothers, Ralph, Harold, Leo, and Jack; and an infant brother, Everett.
Marie is survived by two sons, Jerry and his wife Shirley, and Bob and his wife Barbara, all of Beloit; two daughters, Patricia Ford and her husband Frank of Rozet, Wyoming, and Linda Mann and her husband Paul of Simpson; two sisters, Louise Nelson and Martha Schmitt, both of Beloit; 13 grandchildren; 33 great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 AM Tuesday, November 15, at St. John's Catholic Church in Beloit with burial in St. John's Cemetery. A vigil service will be at 6:00 PM Monday at the McDonald Funeral Home, 910 No. Campbell, Beloit, Kansas 67420. Memorials may be given to St. John's Memorial Trust Fund or the Long Term Care Memorial Garden. Visitation will be from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM Monday at the funeral home.
