Marjorie Florence Scoggan completed life's journey while at the Mitchell County Hospital Long Term Care Unit in Beloit, Kansas and went to be with her Lord and Savior Wednesday evening, October 10, 2007 at the age of 86 years.
Marjorie was born June 5, 1921, fifteen minutes ahead of her identical twin sister Margaret to Harry and Rilla McKee Gates. She and her eight siblings grew up on the "Cedar Point" farm 14 miles southwest of Beloit. The twins, nicknamed Margie and Mickie were identical but unique in personality. Musically blessed with voices that blended perfectly, they were often asked to sing duets as youngsters on through adulthood. Throughout life, they were seldom separated. Sadly, in 1971, Mickie was the first sibling to pass away, as fate would have it, Marjorie is the last. The family and heaven now rejoice that they are all reunited again.
Marjorie married Clarence A. Scoggan on October 2, 1941. This began a lifetime partnership of 3rd generation farming on the Scoggan homestead 11 miles south of Beloit and four very lucky children were born to them. Marjorie's highest ambition was to be a good wife, homemaker and mother-and it came naturally to her. Always there to help, nourish and encourage, she took pride in providing a peaceful, loving home with daily prayer before each nutritional meal. Especially good were her homemade breads, cinnamon rolls, burn-sugar ice cream and noodles from scratch. Besides cooking, she enjoyed quilting, embroidering, table games, and playing the piano with family gathered round to sing. Teaching herself to play the piano at an early age, she could play most songs from the hymnal right up to her last days.
Marjorie responded to a higher calling in life by giving freely of herself to family, church, and anyone in need; she did this in a rather quiet, serene and humble daily lifestyle. She loved children and touch many young lives teaching Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, and years of 4H Leadership involvement. A devoted Christian and member of the Pleasant View Methodist Church since childhood, she witnessed through faithful attendance, active life membership in UMW, and playing the piano on Sunday mornings. Always interested in people's lives, she wrote columns for the Beloit Call's "Pleasant View News" for thirty years until 1989.
Marjorie never complained or worried, always thought and spoke positively or not at all, and verbally was thankful in everything. She had a beautiful laugh and used it often. This contented and happy outlook on life prevailed even as her health and memory declined in later years. As she became more dependent, Clarence cared for her every want and need, right in their home of 66 years on the farm. Their love, faith in God and commitment to each other seemed to grow stronger with every wrinkle and passing year.
Marjorie was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Ancil and Leland Gates, sisters Velma Seaman, Clela Wehl, Margaret Tice, Zola Shull, infant Justine, and Geneva Fuller.
Left to mourn her passing and celebrate her life are her loving husband Clarence of the home, son Gary and wife Linda of Beloit, their children Brett and Thomas; daughter Marieta Hancock of Edmond, Oklahoma, daughter Marlene and husband Santos Bonilla of Salina, Kansas and children Tymony & wife Vonda, Christopher, Tiffany and husband Jason Wells, Teri and husband Jeremy Marshall and Michael; son Roy Scoggan and wife Pam of Beloit and children Amber & husband Mark Masse, Autumn and Alicia; nine great grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, and many friends.
