Martha J. Schmitt

Martha June Schmitt, the daughter of Joseph and Clara Shadowen Abram, was born June 14, 1923, on a farm near Beloit, Kansas. She died July 23, 2008, at the Mitchell County Hospital Long Term Care Unit in Beloit, Kansas, at the age of 85 years.
Martha grew up on the farm and attended country school. She graduated from Beloit High School with the Class of 1941.
On May 4, 1943, Martha was united in marriage with James H. Schmitt at St. John the Baptist Church in Beloit and three daughters and one son were born to that union. After their marriage, the couple lived on a farm northwest of Beloit and then later moved closer to town. They moved to their new home in Beloit in 1962. James died April 22, 1964, and Martha continued to make her home in Beloit. She enjoyed playing cards, making cinnamon rolls for the Senior Center, taking meals to the harvest field and attending the activities of her grandchildren.
Martha worked at Duckwall's, Pauline's Fabrics and MarDon Fabrics in Beloit in addition to caring for her home and keeping in touch with the farm. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Church, the Ladies Guild and the quilting group at the church. She was also a member of the Quest Club the Poinsettia Club, the Country Club and the EHU.
Survivors include three daughters and their husbands, Margaret and Bob McClintock of Yukon, Oklahoma, Betty and Jim Litton and Kathy and Charles File of Beloit; a son Joe Schmitt and wife, Donna of Beloit; a sister, Louise Nelson of Beloit; a sister-in-law, Louise Matous of Beloit; nine grandchildren, Travis Litton and wife, Stephanie, Megan Litton and fiancé, Layton Sauer, Taner Litton, Robin Bowman and husband, Kris, Darin File and wife, Holly, Gary File and wife, Jessica, Amber Schmitt and fiancé, Chantz Martin, Alyssa Schmitt and Garett Schmitt; and four great grandchildren, Chase, Bryce and Gavin Bowman, and Brody Litton.
In addition to her husband, Martha was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Ralph, Harold, Leo and Jack Abram; and a sister, Marie Wessling.
A Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 AM Saturday, July 26, at St. John's Catholic Church in Beloit with burial at St. John's Cemetery. A Vigil Service will be at 7:00 PM Friday at the church. Visitation will be from 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM Friday at the McDonald Funeral Home. Memorials may be given to the church or Solomon Valley Hospice.
