Mary L. Ellis

April 20, 1923 — November 14, 2015

Mary Louise Ellis was born to Hazen and Hazel Carter Lamb on April 20, 1923 at Springfield, Missouri and was released from a long illness Saturday afternoon, November 14, 2015 at Hilltop Lodge in Beloit, Kansas at the age of 92.

Mary graduated from Springfield High School and started college at Drury University in Springfield. Mary decided to take flying lessons about the time the United States was entering World War II. She dreamt of being a woman pilot in the war. On the day of her first lesson, she saw an instructor yelling at a flight student. She promptly wished that instructor was NOT hers. When her name was called to step forward to meet her instructor, she was shocked to see it was the instructor who had lost his temper. It was love at first sight for Thomas Jay Ellis; from that point on he always made sure that Mary was HIS student. She often said she traded in her pilot's license for a marriage license.

Tom and Mary were married for 69 years until Tom passed away in 2012. With Tom's career with the Boeing Company, Mary was a supportive partner in all the job assignments. She dreamt of traveling the world and lived that dream. They lived in Montana, Missouri, Kansas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Washington, Spain, and China. Finally in 1998 the couple moved to Beloit, Kansas. Mary always commented that the move to Beloit was the best move they ever made.

Mary loved her family, life, and home. One of their passions was traveling in Europe, Middle East, and Asia. She loved being with her family whenever possible, volunteer work, and enjoyed learning two languages as well as reading and playing bridge.

She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and Chapter K PEO in Beloit.

Her parents, stepfather George Goodloe, brother Lester Carter, great grandson Otis Ellis, son-in-law Charles Rasmussen, granddaughter-in-law Cari McGrath and her beloved husband Tom Ellis preceded her in death.

Left to mourn her passing and celebrate her life are children Carolyn Sue Rasmussen of Las Vegas, NV, Jay Ellis and wife Barbara Ann of Plano, TX, Barbara McGrath and husband Harry of Beloit; six grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Graveside Services will be held at 1:30 P.M. Saturday, December 5, 2015 at Elmwood Cemetery with Pastor Deb Hadachek officiating. Memorials may be given to Solomon Valley Hospice. Visitation will be from 9:00 A.M. until 8:00 P.M. Friday at the McDonald Funeral Home
