Mary Kathleen Johnston was born on December 24, 1936 in Cawker City, Kansas, the daughter of Mathias and Florence Thomas Pahls. She died Saturday, December 8, 2012 at the Mitchell County Hospital in Beloit, Kansas at the age of 75 years, 11 months, and 15 days.
Kay grew up and attended schools in Cawker City and graduated from Cawker City High School.
On September 5, 1959 she was united in marriage with Joseph Johnston at the St. John's Catholic Church in Beloit. To this union four daughters were born; Nanette, Barbara, Brenda, and Jennifer.
The family lived in various towns in Kansas before settling in Pittsburg in 1970. They moved to Salina in 1984, where she worked for Tony's Pizza. She retired from there in 1993, and they moved to Cawker City.
Kay had a kind heart, and was known to take in stray cats, dogs and kids. She served many years as a Girl Scout leader and was the past president of the Our Lady of Lourdes Altar Society in Pittsburg. She was the current president of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 379 in Cawker City.
She was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters, Adeline Robinson, Lucille Schmiedeler, Rosella DeRee, and Genevieve Dekker; and one brother, James Pahls.
Kay is survived by her husband Joe; four daughters, Nanette McManus of Parkville, MO, Barbara (Ray) Schmidt of Carl Junction, MO, Brenda (Gary) Brown of Lawrence, KS, and Jennifer (Gary) Felkner of Leawood, KS; three brothers, Edwin Pahls of Cawker City, Raymond Pahls of Wichita, and Dean Pahls of Salina; one sister, Agnes MacDonald of Wichita; five grandchildren, Lindsay Jo McManus, Rachel, Veronica, and Allison Felkner, and Lucy Brown; and two step grandchildren, Tina Schmidt and Jeff Brown; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be at 10 AM Thursday, December 13 at the Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church. A rosary service will be at 7 PM Wednesday at the Church. Visitation will take place after the rosary service. Memorials may be given to the American Legion Auxiliary or the Church.
