Mary V. Streit

Mary Veronica Streit was born August 29, 1913 to Herman and Crescentia Schadegg Becker on a farm west of Tipton. She departed this life of 98 years peacefully Thursday morning, December 22, 2011 at Hilltop Lodge in Beloit, Kansas.

Mary's mother died when she was one year old; Mary and her twin sister Anna lived with their aunt Teckla Adams in the Plainville area. Mary and Anna returned to go to school at Tipton, walking two miles each way.

On May 30, 1933, she married John Henry Streit at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Tipton, and to this union Robert, Dorothy, Maxine, Estella, Benedict, Martha Jean, Janet, Walter, Darlene, and Gary were born to this union. Mary and her husband farmed in the Tipton community, living on their farm until 1975 when they moved into a new home in Tipton. John died in 1981.

A devout Catholic, Mary focused her life on faithfully attending Mass and caring for her large family. She loved cooking, sewing and working in her garden. Mary had a special knack for raising chickens and was no stranger to hard work as she helped John with the farming operations.

She was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church and St. Anne's Altar Society.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, her step mother Anna, her husband John, and an infant son Clarence. In addition, she was preceded in death by her siblings Matthew, Theresa Steichen, Pauline Schauf, Theo, Bernadine Eck, Joseph, Anton, Conrad, and her twin sister Anna Eck, and one half-brother Henry.

Left to celebrate her life are her children Robert Streit (Doris), Springdale, Arkansas, Dorothy Winkel (Paul), Glen Elder, Maxine Winkel, Cawker City, Estella Rankin (Bill), Abilene, Benedict Streit (Linda K.), Tipton, Martha Jean Heidrick (Don), Anthony, KS, Janet Tate (Carl), Loveland, Colo, Walter Streit (Nancy), Downs, Darlene Corwin (Randy), Osborne, Gary Streit (Janelle), Tipton; a half-sister Veronica Becker, Downs; 37 grandchildren, a multitude of great and great-great grandchildren and many friends.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, December 27, 2011 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Tipton. Burial will follow in St. Boniface Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Tipton Christian School, Tipton Catholic School or St. Boniface Memorial Trust Fund. Visitation will be from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Monday at the church where the Parish Vigil and Rosary will be held at 7:00 P.M.
