Maurice V. Mcdonald

Maurice Vail McDonald, the eldest of two children born to George Vail and Mabel Marie Shurts McDonald, was born Thursday, June 3, 1920 in Beloit, Kansas. After a rather brief illness, he departed this life of 86 years, 6 months, and 1 day Monday evening, December 4, 2006 at the Mitchell County Hospital in Beloit, Kansas.

"Maury" as everyone knew him, graduated from Beloit High School in the Class of 1938. He continued his education at the University of Kansas, receiving his degree from the Williams Institute of Mortuary Science in the Fall of 1941.

On Saturday, September 20, 1941 he married his high school sweetheart Frances Leota Simmons at the First Christian Church in Beloit. Four children Lynda Beth, Larry Vail, Philip James, and Mark Maurice were born to this union of sixty-five years.

After his World War II U.S. Navy Service which included participation in the invasion of Normandy, he returned to Beloit to join his father as the third generation Embalmer and Funeral Director, professionally serving the community until his retirement in 1989.

Always a man of faith and vision, he took full advantage of every opportunity that arose. He loved the Beloit community and faithfully served in numerous capacities including the Beloit City School Board, Beloit Area Chamber of Commerce, Beloit Rotary Club, and the Beloit City Tree Board. He was President of the Kansas Funeral Directors Association. He loved classical music and played violin in the Beloit Community Orchestra since its inception.

He was a patriarch of First Christian Church where he cheerfully served in virtually every capacity of church life and attended until the very end.

Left to mourn his passing and celebrate his life are his wife Frances of the home, one daughter Lynda Myers and husband Dwain of Lincoln, Nebraska, three sons Larry McDonald and wife Chris of Prairie Village, Kansas, Philip McDonald and wife Joanie of Sacramento, California, Mark McDonald wife Debra of Beloit; nine grandchildren, five great grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and many many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and one sister Mary Maurine Shurtz.

Funeral Services will be held at 1:30 P.M. Friday, December 8, 2006 at First Christian Church. Interment will follow in Elmwood Cemetery with military rites. Memorials may be given to the First Christian Church Scholarship or Missions Fund or the Port Library.

Mr. McDonald will lie in state in in the McDonald Funeral Home Chapel from 9:00 A.M. until 8:00 P.M. Thursday where the family will receive friends from 6:30 P.M. until 7:30 P.M.
