Max Van Horn

January 20, 1927 — February 6, 2012

Max George Van Horn was born on January 20, 1927, in rural Franklin Co., KS, to Percy and Grace (Young) Van Horn. He departed from this world on February 6, 2012, at the age of 85 years in Salina, KS.
He grew up loving the farm and animals as he helped on the farms of his parents and grandparents. Max followed in their footsteps by starting to farm after graduating from Wellsville High School in 1944.
On September 4, 1949, Max married Myrna E. Shepherd in Great Bend, KS. To this 62 year union were born 2 children, 1 son, Stephen and 1 daughter, Crystal. They all moved in 1956 to Jewell Co. to start a diversified dairy farm. They later raised Gelbvieh cattle. In 2008, Max and Myrna retired from the farm to Eaglecrest in Salina.
Max always believed in conserving the land, loving family, friends, and church, as well as serving the community. He served on numerous boards from 4-H and extension, Lions, Gideons, American Baptist Men, and the Cawker City Baptist Church. Max and Myrna went on several mission work trips to Nicaragua, Haiti, and Kodiak, Alaska over the years.
Besides being preceded in death by Myrna in Sept 2011, Max was preceded in death by his sister, Sara Jean Currier. Max is survived by his children, Steve (Mitzie) Van Horn, Denison, Crystal (Robert) Obee, Kinsley, as well as 1 brother, Dale (Zelma) Van Horn, Ottawa, and 1 brother-in-law, Bryant Currier, Wellsville. Other survivors include 3 grandchildren: Barry (Jenia) Van Horn, Shawnee, Denise (Larry) Bowles, Topeka, and Tony (Heather) Van Horn, Colorado Springs. Also surviving are 7 great granddaughters, 1 great grandson, and numerous other family members.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 AM Monday, February 13 at the McDonald Funeral Home followed by burial in Prairie Grove Cemetery in Cawker City. Visitation will be from 2 to 6 PM at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to the Cawker City Baptist Church, Gideons International, or Holiday Resort-Rapid Recovery Unit.
