Melvin "Dennis" D. Brummer

March 30, 1942 — October 15, 2015

Melvin "Dennis" Donald Brummer was born in Osborne, Kansas on March 30, 1942 to John and Caroline (Koster) Brummer. He died October 15, 2015 at his home after a long and courageous battle with cancer at the age of 73.
He grew up in Cawker City, Kansas and attended St. Theresa's Academy in Cawker City, and then attended Cawker City High School. He enjoyed playing on the basketball team at St. Theresa's. During that time, the team won many awards for their school.
Dennis married Marilyn (Kay) Eaton Brummer, and to this union three children were born. This marriage was later dissolved and he then married Mary (Barnes) Angell. At that time two additional children joined the family. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He loved having his family near, and they all loved spending time with him. His famous hugs will be greatly missed by all.
He retired from Great Plains Manufacturing (formerly Kent Manufacturing) in February 2010, where he worked for 44 years. During this time, he made several life-time friends. Prior to that, he worked for Becker's Manufacturing at Corinth, and in his early years worked at the grocery store in Downs in the meat department.
Dennis enjoyed many outdoor activities including fishing, camping, and hunting with his family. He had many talents, including carpentry, mechanics, plumbing, and electric – if it was broken, he could fix it.
He was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, and also the Knights of Columbus.
Dennis was preceded in death by his son, Billy Eugene (who died in infancy); his parents, John and Caroline Brummer; brother, Laverne (who died in infancy); sister, Madonna McInroy; and sister-in-law, Kay Brummer.
He is survived by his wife Mary of the home; children, Cindy and Tom Mick of Nebraska City, Nebraska, Dennis Brummer of Hutchinson, James and Samantha Angell of Salina, and Jennifer Angell of Wichita; sister Danielle and Gene Nuanes of Bloomfield, Colorado; brothers, Duane and Sheri Brummer of Salina, Kenneth and Betty Brummer of Salina, and Calvin Brummer of Beloit; 13 grandchildren; and 8 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 10 AM Thursday, October 22 at the Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Cawker City. A parish vigil service will be held at 7 PM Wednesday at the Church. Visitation will be Wednesday from 6 PM until the vigil service begins. The casket will remain closed. Memorials may be given to the Cawker City Senior Center or Solomon Valley Hospice.
