Melvin Joseph Hake was born November 30, 1930 to Matthew Ignatius and Elizabeth Smith Hake at Cawker City, Kansas. He departed this life of 80 years, 7 months, and 14 days late Thursday evening, July 14, 2011 at the Mitchell County Hospital in Beloit, Kansas.
Melvin spent his early years growing up in the Cawker City area and then lived in the Beloit area for many years.
He married Ann Merril and to this union were born two sons Terry and Timothy. This union was later dissolved. Melvin later married Beverly Isaacson Freeburg and they made their home on a farm just north of Beloit. Beverly died in 2009.
Melvin was a man of great strength and devotion. He loved farming and strived to be the best steward and tender of the land that he could. Melvin was always very frugal. He enjoyed being around people and enjoyed visiting with them; you always knew where you stood with him. He loved his family, was a good husband, and enjoyed being with his grandchildren. In addition, Melvin overcame alcoholism, largely on his own strength. He was very handy, enjoyed woodworking, and built furniture.
Melvin served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.
He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Beverly.
Left to mourn his passing and celebrate his life are his sons Terry Hake of Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota, Timothy Hake and wife Marilyn of Trimble, Missouri; step sons Randy Freeburg and wife Margaret of Woodbridge, Virginia, Rex Freeburg and wife Barb of Hastings, Nebraska; step daughters Teri Freeburg of Kansas City, Missouri, Vicki Freeburg of Mt. Vernon, Washington; one brother Matthew Hake, Jr. of Cawker City; two sisters Mildred Bachoffer and husband Frank of Sacramento, California, Dorothy Lewis and husband Don of Denver, Colorado; four beloved grandchildren Amanda, Megan, Kelsey, and Austin Hake, and many friends.
Father Joseph Kieffer will celebrate the Funeral Mass at 10 AM Tuesday, July 19, 2011 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery with military honors. Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society or the Beloit Isle of Lights. Visitation will be from 9 AM until 8 PM Monday at the McDonald Funeral Home where the Parish Vigil and Rosary will be held at 6:30 P.M.
