Meredith Opal (Boller) Nicholson, daughter of August William and Viola Ross Boller was born February 16, 1916 on a farm south of Glen Elder, Kansas. She died Saturday, August 15, 2009 at the Mitchell County Hospital in Beloit at the age of 93 years, 5 months, and 28 days.
Meredith grew up on the farm and went to Bunker Hill School. In 1927, they moved to a farm south of Cawker City. She attended Waconda Country School and graduated from the eighth grade from the Cawker City Grade School. She graduated from Cawker City High School in the class of 1934. Having taken Normal Training, she taught country school for three years.
On March 31, 1940, she was united in marriage with Ralph Albert Nicholson at the Osborne Christian Church. They moved to a farm south of Glen Elder for several years and then they moved to their own farm 1 ½ miles south of Glen Elder. They moved from there in 1962, when they were forced to move on account of the Glen Elder dam. Two sons were born to this union.
In 1962, she began working at the Professional Photographers in Beloit, and worked there for 15 years.
She was a member of the Glen Elder Christian Church, the Ladies Aide Society, and the Glen Elder Rebekah Lodge, and then transferred to the Liberty Rebekah Lodge in Beloit.
She was the second-oldest child and the last remaining of her family. She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Gerald, Arnold, and Kendall, who died in infancy; two sisters, Viletta Newquist and Varetta Wiese; her youngest son, Larry Allen, who was killed in an accident in 1960, and Albert Lee, who died of Hodgkin's Disease in 1973; and her husband, Ralph, who died in September 1984.
Survivors include three grandchildren and their spouses, Gregory and Annie Nicholson, Deborah and Bruce Gunter, and Lisa and Ron Grilliot; eight great grandchildren, Erin and Morgan Grilliot, Matthew, Emily, and Jordan Nicholson, and Meghan, Aubrey, and Travis Gunter; and several nieces and nephews and their families.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM Wednesday, August 19 at the McDonald Funeral Home followed by burial in Elmwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to the Beloit Senior Center or Solomon Valley Hospice.
