Merle Marie Porter

March 30, 1914 — December 5, 2007

Merle Marie Broadbent Porter died Wednesday afternoon, December 5, 2007 at the Mitchell County Hospital in Beloit, Kansas, ending a life of 93 years, 8 months, and 6 days.

She was born March 30, 1914 to Roddie Ray and Ethel Hixenbaugh Broadbent on a farm in Center Township of Mitchell County, Kansas.

Merle grew up on the family farm in the Pleasant View neighborhood south of Beloit, and at an early age was baptized into Christ at the Pleasant View Church. She graduated from Beloit High School in the Class of 1932, and on August 11, 1934 she was united in marriage with Ralph Edward Porter at Beloit, Kansas. Two children Jacqualin Jo and James Rodney were born to this union.

Merle and her family made their home in the Glen Elder area. Ralph was a longtime plumber for the Rawlings Plumbing Company and she enjoyed taking care of her home along with working for a number of businesses in Glen Elder. Ralph died on September 26, 1988 and she remained in her home until entering Hilltop Lodge about 17 months ago.

Always pleasant, Merle did not let the many adversities she faced keep her from living a productive life. Her father was killed in a tragic accident in 1935; her daughter required continual care; and in 1965 she and Ralph lost their son James in an automobile accident. Later, Ralph became an invalid and she lovingly cared for him until he entered Hilltop Lodge. All through these many trials, she never complained and remained close to her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Ralph, one son James in 1965, one daughter Jacqualin Jo in 1977; three sisters Frances McKimson, Freda Heil, Marjorie Grotz, and one brother Gerald Broadbent.

Survivors are one brother Loren Broadbent of Whittier, California; sisters-in-law Ruth Kadel of Beloit, Geneva Porter of Glen Elder; a host of many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Monday, December 10, 2007 at the McDonald Funeral Home with Pastor Kelly Benton officiating. Burial will follow in the Glenwood Cemetery at Glen Elder. Memorials may be given to the Waconda Heritage Village, and friends may call from 1:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. Sunday at the McDonald Funeral Home.
