Death came softly to Michael Garst, 63, on October 2nd, 2016 as he was ushered into the presence of the Lord. Mike was born in Beloit, KS on January 10, 1953 to Franky and Doris (Diers) Garst.
He grew up in southern California and graduated from Carson High School in 1971. He enlisted in the USAF where he served as a jet mechanic on the F-4, C-141, C-5 and various helicopters.
After an honorable discharge he returned to southern California where he met and married the love of his life, Donna (Howell) Garst in August 1978. To this union was born one daughter, Julie Dawn.
He graduated from Life Pacific College with a B.A. in Pastoral Studies and was an ordained minister with the International Church of the Foursquare Gospel. He pastored churches in Southern California and Arizona and later pursued post graduate certificates in CPE and ACPE. He served as a hospital chaplain at Yuma Regional Medical Center, Loma Linda University Medical Center and was Director of Chaplains at Corona Community Hospital.
In 1993 the family moved to Glasco, Kansas to be with family and he began working for the United States Postal Service. He served as Postmaster in Randall, Burr Oak, and retired as Postmaster in Glasco in 2015.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Frankie Lee and Douglas Scott Garst.
He is survived by his wife Donna, his daughter Julie (Garst) Nixon, son in-law David Nixon and one grandson, Cory David Nixon.
A memorial service will be held at the Glasco United Methodist Church at 10:30 A.M. Thursday, October 6, 2016 with Pastor Loren Houltberg of Emmanuel Foursquare Church, Salina officiating. Cremation has taken place and his ashes will be placed in Arlington National Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Solomon Valley Hospice or the Cory Nixon Education Fund. Dean Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
