Mildred E. Slaven-Blunt

April 30, 1918 — May 11, 2007

Mildred Edna Slaven-Blunt, the daughter of Cleveland and Edna McCormick Wise, was born April 30, 1918 in Cawker City, Kansas, and departed this life after a lengthy illness on Friday, May 11, 2007 at Villa St. Joseph Nursing Home in Overland Park, Kansas at the age of 89.
Mildred was known as "Mickey" to her friends and family. She grew up in Cawker City and attended school there, graduating from Cawker City High School in the class of 1936. As a young woman, she taught school in a one-room school house near Tipton. Later, she taught 4 years at the Granite Creek one-room school.
She met Max Slaven at the skating rink in Downs, and they were married on April 23, 1941. For a time, they lived on a farm south of Cawker City, and later moved to town. Mickey was a wonderful homemaker. Mickey and Max raised four children together, Sharon Kay, Stanley Max, Shirley Jo, and Sondra Leigh, who tragically passed away from an auto accident in 1967 at the age of 15.
Her husband Max died in November 1989. In the early 90's, she moved from Cawker City to Salina to be closer to her daughter Shirley. She became reacquainted with Dale Blunt, an old friend and classmate of her brother Gene, and they were married. Mickey and Dale lived in Wichita until his death in April 2004. She then moved to Kansas City to be closer to her daughters, Sharon and Shirley.
Mickey was a member of the Cawker City United Methodist Church, and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was also a member of the "Mac-A-Con" bridge club. She was a Den Mother while Stan was in Cub Scouts, and did the same for Sondra and Shirley in Girl Scouts. She became a wonderful cook, and for a time was the "chef" at multiple restaurants in Cawker City. Later, she became associated with the school lunch program in the Cawker Schools as a cook. They later moved to Ponca City, Oklahoma, and she was associated with Saga Food Service in the hospital.
Mickey was a person who wanted you to do your best and in her way, communicated that feeling to those she came in contact with. It is a rare person who can get along with people as easily as she did throughout her life. She was compassionate and caring to all who knew her.
Her family was very important to her and grandchildren and great grandchildren were her greatest joy.
In addition to her husbands, Max and Dale; and her daughter, Sondra, Mickey was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Dorothy Brummer; and one brother, Gene Wise.
Mickey is survived by her two daughters, Shirley and her husband Brad Gunelson of Overland Park, and Sharon and her husband Larry Parsons of DeSoto; one son, Stan and his wife Frances Slaven of Cypress, California; four grandchildren, Michele Erim and husband Raif of Nashville, Dawn Sherwood and husband Brandon of Salina, Sean Slaven of Buena Vista, California, and Michael Roach; three great granddaughters, Savannah and Cierra Sherwood, and Quinn Erim; two great grandsons, Chandler Sherwood and Greyson Erim; two sisters, Ilo and husband Keith Oakley of Lawrence, Kansas, and Margaret Wells of Sun City, Arizona; and a host of step grandchildren, step great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Funeral services will be at 1:00 PM Friday, May 18 at the Cawker City United Methodist Church followed by burial in Prairie Grove Cemtery in Cawker City. Memorials may be given to the Church or the Odyssey Hospice of Kansas City. Visitation will be from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at the Waconda Funeral Home.
