Monte Bean

Monte Dan Bean passed away on July 20, 2026, at the Nicol Home in Glasco, Kansas at the age of 78. Monte was born on April 9, 1948, in Beloit, Kansas, to Daniel and Lois (Rarick) Bean.

The oldest of four boys, he spent his childhood years on a farm northwest of Beloit. He attended the Center School, near Solomon Rapids, Kansas, through the 8th grade. In 1962, the family moved to Beloit, where he would attend Beloit High School, graduating with the Class of 1966. During his senior year, he volunteered for the United States Air Force. Before basic training he filled his time with jobs such as cutting wheat with a harvest crew and helping bricklayers construct the addition on the Courtland elementary school. He completed basic training in Amarillo, Texas, transferred to Chanute Air Force Base in Rantoul, Illinois, for aircraft mechanic and maintenance schooling, then was sent to Norton Air Force Base in San Bernardino, California, in March 1967. He spent the next two years readying planes for the transport of Marines and cargo to Vietnam. In 1969, he was transferred to Forbes Air Force Base in Topeka, Kansas, where he spent the rest of his enlistment. He was discharged in October 1970 with the rank of staff sergeant.

After returning home from the military, he worked for the Mitchell County Road Department and Sunflower Manufacturing before attending Beloit Vocational Technical School for carpentry and bricklaying. For the next six years, he worked with several contractors to construct houses and buildings throughout the area.

For most of his life, he raised cattle, hogs, goats, sheep, and chickens on his farm East of Beloit. When not farming Monte attended livestock and farm auctions. Buying sickly animals for little of nothing and raising them gave him great joy. The farm auctions allowed him to purchase an abundance of “investments”.

On May 15, 1971, Monte married Marylin Kay Beaushaw. Five children were born to this union. They later divorced. On October 16, 2004, he married Ileen Ehrsam.

He is preceded in death by his parents and an infant son, Monte Dan Bean II.

He is survived by Ileen, his children, Melissa (Matthew) Schuster, Superior, Nebraska; Melinda (Chuck) Latham, Beloit, Kansas; Melanie (Anthony) Lira, La Grange, Texas; and Matthew (Crystal) Bean, Glasco, Kansas; step-children, J.D. (Michelle) Ehrsam, Olathe, Kansas and Jill Ehrsam, Beloit, Kansas, brothers, Murray (Janet) Bean, Oakley, Kansas; Max (Susan) Bean, Glen Elder, Kansas; and Mark (Jennifer) Bean, Glen Elder, Kansas; 14 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren with one on the way, as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Services will be held on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, at 10:00 a.m.,at the Scottsville Community Church in Scottsville, Kansas. Interment will be at the West Asher Cemetery, along Highway 9, in eastern Mitchell County following the service. Full military honors will be conducted. Visitation will be from 1-7 PM, with family present from 5-7 PM Tuesday, July 28 at the Roberts Family Funeral Home. Cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Monte’s name can be given to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and may be sent to Roberts Family Funeral Home, 910 N Campbell, Beloit, Ks 67420.
