Nicholas Aloysius Reinert was born June 9, 1906 to Peter Anton and Barbara Boden Reinert on a farm southwest of Tipton, Kansas. He departed this life of 101 years, 6 months, and 1 day Monday evening, December 10, 2007 at the Golden Living Center in Downs, Kansas.
"Nick", as everyone knew him, was one of fourteen children, and he grew up during the depression on the family farm, attending school as time would allow.
On June 25, 1935, he was united in marriage to Anna (Ann) Catherine Streit at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Tipton. Three children Edna, Richard, and Virginia were born to this happy union. After their marriage, they lived in Osborne, later moving to a farm south of Downs, and in 1949 they moved to a farm north of Cawker City. Anna died in 1982, and Nick continued living on the farm until 1991 when he moved to Downs. He was fortunate to live in his home until 2 months before his 100th birthday.
Farming was not Nick's job, but rather his passion. Throughout his career, he saw a vast number of changes. Hard work, long hours, unpredictable weather, and unstable economics would not deter him. His leisure time was happiest spent playing cards, especially pinochle and pitch. Being of German descent, Nick and Ann enjoyed dancing, especially the polka. He enjoyed eating lunch with his friends at the Senior Center, playing pool which he learned at the age of 95 and going bowling. Nick also exercised regularly and spent time reading.
A quiet man, Nick cherished hard work and good food. He was ornery and fun loving at times, but when he spoke, everyone listened. His grandchildren and great grandchildren were a great source of joy for him. As one of the oldest in his family, his siblings were forever in his heart.
He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.
His parents preceded him in death. In addition, he was preceded in death by his wife Anna; three children LaVerne, Roberta and Nicholas who died at birth; brothers Frank, Leo, Pete, Joe, William and Bennie Reinert; and sisters Marie Reinert, Bertha Adams and Lucille Reinert. His beloved daughter-in-law Bonnie Reinert died in August, 2007.
Left to mourn his passing and celebrate his life are his children Edna Henke and husband Edwin of Amarillo, Texas, Richard Reinert of Downs, Virginia Johnson and husband Wayne of Denver, Colorado; one brother Anton Reinert of Downs, three sisters Loretta Wagner of Downs, Agatha Corbett of Chapman, Veronica (Fronie) Slothower of Osborne, eleven grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren, one great great grandchild and a host of many relatives and friends.
The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M. Monday, December 17, 2007 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Downs. Burial will follow in St. Boniface Cemetery at Tipton.
