Opal Mae Glauser was born January 1, 1927 in Jewell County, Kansas, one of five children to John and Merle Dean Shoemaker. She died Wednesday, August 15, 2018 at Hilltop Lodge in Beloit, Kansas at the age of 91 years, 7 months, and 14 days.
She spent her lifetime in both Jewell and Mitchell Counties, and attended country schools before graduating from Glen Elder High School in 1945, where she earned her Normal Training, and taught country school north of Glen Elder and also in Asherville.
On December 18, 1951, she was united in marriage with her high school classmate, Robert E. Glauser. Two children, Larry and Sharon, were born to this happy union. They lived on several farmsteads in Mitchell and Jewell Counties. They were privileged to spend more than 63 years of marriage together until his death in September, 2015.
Opal always enjoyed her big garden, where she kept fresh flowers and vegetables for canning. She also spent time raising chickens and tending her cows. In addition, she enjoyed oil painting, and her weekly get-togethers with friends.
Family was very important to her – she loved the big family dinners, decorating cakes for her grandchildren, playing and singing together, and following her grandchildren's sporting events and graduations.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Harold Shoemaker; brothers-in-law, Melvin Douglas and Bill Weber; and her sister-in-law, Eleanor Shoemaker.
Opal is survived by her son, Larry and his wife Diane of Glen Elder; her daughter, Sharon Fletchall and her husband Marty of Beloit; her sisters, Virginia Douglas of Marysville and Judy Weber of Troy; her brother, Delmar Shoemaker of Glen Elder; five grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; two step great grandchildren; and a host of relatives and friends.
