Opal Ilene Lavy, the daughter of Roy Franklin and Minnie Anne Birch Kelly, was born January 20, 1909, at Atwood, Kansas. She died July 14, 2006, at the Nicol Home in Glasco, Kansas, at the age of 97 years, 5 months and 25 days.
Opal attended Eureka Country School and graduated from Glasco High School with the Class of 1927. After graduation, she taught country school for several terms.
Opal was united in marriage with Lawrence "Dinty" Lavy in 1936, at Concordia, Kansas, and they made their home in Glasco. Five children were born to that union.
After her husband's death in 1951, Opal went to work as a cook in the Glasco Schools, and after her retirement, she became a cook for the Nicol Home for several years.
Opal was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, the Ladies Aide of the church and the VFW Auxiliary. She enjoyed quilting, gardening, raising flowers and cooking. Her family was very special to her and she greatly enjoyed watching their activities. She was a devoted fan of the Kansas City Royals.
Survivors include two sons and their wives, Lewis and Beverly Lavy of Hutchinson, and Art and Sharon Lavy of Santa Fe, New Mexico; a daughter, Elda Wolf and her husband, Jim of McPherson; 21 grandchildren; 31 great grandchildren; and 3 great great grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, Opal was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Carl and Larry; and a brother, Lonnie Kelly.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 AM Tuesday, July 18, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Glasco with burial in Glasco Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Lutheran Ladies Aide or the Nicol Home. Visitaiton will be from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM Monday at the Dean Funeral Home, 301 East Mian, Glasco, KS 67445.
