Peter W. Lorenz was born January 7, 1946 to Mathilda and William Lorenz, Pete grew up the oldest of seven children in Valley City, North Dakota. He graduated from St. Catherine's High School, Valley City, ND, and went on to attend North Dakota State University. He joined the North Dakota National Guard in 1966 and went on to have a 30 year career between the North Dakota and Kansas Army National Guard. On December 30, 1969, he married Nancy Schoeder. Together, they had two children, William Peter and Karen Marie.
Early in his 40+ year career as a grain marketer for the National Farmers Organization, he was transferred to Beloit, KS where he made his home for the remainder of his life. A farmer at heart, he maintained many friendships with the farmers with whom he worked. He loved going on hunting trips with friends and his son. A friendly and hardworking man, he was active in the community and many organizations. A champion of the poor and working class, he supported several Democratic candidates and he himself served ten years on the Beloit City Council.
A lifelong Catholic, Pete was an active member of St. John's Catholic Church in Beloit, serving at times as an usher, a member of the Knights of Columbus, and a member of the parish council. He was particularly supportive and fond of the St. John's Catholic Schools, offering support driving players to games, joining the Booster Club, writing up games for the Beloit Call, and making purchases from many a school fundraiser. He was particularly pleased to establish the Pete and Nancy Lorenz Family Scholarship.
Pete was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Joan Lorenz, all of Valley City, North Dakota. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Lorenz, and their son, Bill Lorenz, both of Beloit, and their daughter, Karen (Lorenz) Wright, her husband Trevor, and their children Lillian and Troy, of Independence, Missouri. Additionally, he is survived by three sisters, Bonnie Lorenz of White Bear Lake, MN, Kay (and Bill) Brunner of Fort Myers, FL, and Teresa (and Marvin) Shape of Valley City, ND, and two brothers, Tom Lorenz of Valley City, ND, and Jeff Lorenz of Plainsboro, NJ.
He passed away on May 1, 2022, at Salina Regional Health Center, Salina, KS, with his wife, son, and daughter at his bedside.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM Wednesday, May 11 at the St. John's Catholic Church. To view Pete Lorenz's funeral click on this link. A rosary service will be at 10 AM at the Church. Visitation will be from 1-7 PM Tuesday, May 10 at the Roberts Family Funeral Home. The casket will remain closed. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Peter & Nancy Lorenz Family Scholarship Fund or the National Kidney Foundation.
